If Unions are what is best then why do they fear competition?

The screwed up part...."right to work" doesn't spell the end for unions. They are still allowed, they just are not going to be mandatory for employment. The correct question is "if union boses are so confident in the benefits of membership, then why worry at all?" This is a great move for employee rights.

Popkern is right. I am a union side attorney in Detroit. As the Wayne County Executive said today, this will be a civil war. Once Michigan goes, you may as well just kill unions nationwide.

Serious question...why is that? I thought right to work just meant that a union shop couldn't force new employees to join.

So, I’m guessing you’re pretty excited by this news then? You’re about to get paid. You win either way.

The reason I don't think it's necessary is that you already had a right to opt out of paying for dues that aren't for contract negotiation or grievance adjustment -- in other words, no political stuff. Now, everyone can be a free rider. There is some argument that it will make unions more accountable to the membership because they will pay dues if they are satisfied with their service, but I don't buy it. I can't speak to the public union angle as I am not well-versed in that world.

If it was up to Repubs there would be no labor laws. We would go back to the Industrial Revolution times. Let those hard working self made billionaire entrepreneurs do whatever they want to the rest of us.

I know right. That would be after they kill all the puppies first, so you have time to adjust.
