| Question about SEC revenue sharing (Posted on 12/6/12 at 12:52 pm)
If SEC divides the revenue among its members equally, how do the winners of SEC or NC titles benefit financially?

I don't think it is divided equally is it? I guess I always assumed that the team playing in a particular bowl would get the most and then the other 13 teams would divide the remaining portion equally.

Teams take travel/entertainment expenses out, the rest goes into a pot and split 15 ways.

And the SEC office takes their share, puts it in an unmarked envelope, and slides it under Mal Moore's office door.

14 schools and SEC admin takes an equal share.

Wow. Seems like the wrong way to do it. I feel like whichever teams play in the higher revenue bowls should get a bigger % of that than everyone else. But then again, who am I?

The Big 12 thought the same.

Think about this, Notre Dame makes money every year despite no conference affiliations. The are guaranteed 2.5 or 3 million, I can't remember.

So, there is no financial advantage in being LSU/ Alabama vs Vandy/Ole Miss?

Actually it is more socialistic. Obama's public option died.

I believe the participating school gets a larger portion (not by much) to cover travel expenses etc...I remember one year reading an article that after LSU paid it's expenses and bonuses it really came out even. Splitting it and then taking out the expenses is why non major football schools that get into a BCS game like UConn (lost $2 million) and NIU lose money even tho they get a BCS bowl bid. On one hand I would like to see participating teams get a larger share, on the other hand the SEC doesn't have teams trying to leave left and right like some other conferences.

It's more like 1.4 or so which is about what a BCS conference member that shares money equally gets from the BCS, e.g. Ole Miss. When they go BCS, although the NCG may be different but I don't think so, they get what the second team from a conference gets which is about 4.5 or so.

Their brand value goes up. They sell t-shirts and crap with "national champion" all over it and take their royalties. I took sports marketing at LSU the year after they won the 2007 NC and they said our brand jumped to No. 7 in overall value that year. What's amazing is how Notre Dame/Michigan stay in the top 5 even when they suck.
