Disregard my previous recomm. and go ahead and get the 300 in case you decide to go out west or end up hunting someplace diff. Despite some peoples belief it is not too much gun for deer hunting. They wont be "too dead"

I used 30-06 but 270 is fine you do not need 300. It is for shooting Dahl sheep off mountains in Alaska a mile or so away. My dad had one and we used for deer hunting and then he get tired out it and traded for 30-06. A 300 mag with literally kick you off a damn stand if you are not careful. (Wet day wet shoes etc) plus not safe for everyone else in woods for your bullet to still have kill power two miles away man. Likely to kill a somebody or more likely a car, AC, or somebodies house.

Of those three I usually suggest a .30-06 in case he ever gets to go elk hunting. The other two don't have nearly the ammo selection for large stuff that the .30-06 has

Agreed unless he does hand loading which will provide him with a better selection for all calibers but for off the shelf ammo the 30-06 range will not be matched

They're also no deader with that loud arse hard kicking expensive bullet launching .meat destroying 300 than they are with a .270

It's just completely unnecessary. It has no advantage over .270/.308/.30-06 for deer inside of 300 yards. Some people just like makin really big booms and fireballs and I get that. I just don't think it's a smart choice for your basic ol deer hunter.

Points to consider if you go 7mm mag or 300 mag, you are looking at longer barrels and a heavier gun, not the end of the world but I have toted my 7 mag around the woods for 20 years, and I am happy to have the lighter 270 now, also the longer barrel makes the rifle harder to manage in close quarters (a deer stand) but can be done... also for those talking about the 270 mag..are you talking about the 270 WSM? if so what I have been told is that it is nearly the same ballistics as the 270 but a shorter cartridge, and as of right now much less choices for ammo....if that is true I would stick with the 270 win

IN layman's terms, describe the bullet characteristics of the following: 7mm-08 30-06 .270 .300mag OTher? I have a 30-06 and would like another rifle that compliments the 30-06 of what the 30-06 doesn't do as well something else would. I dont' know too much crap about this.

Didn't say it was best choice( not a bad choice either) but he has a good choice for the average whitetail hunter so the suggestion was to give him a little more power if he ever goes after bigger game are ends up hunting long distances(not that it is needed for that) Are we really gonna do all this again? I'm tired just thinking about it

You can go two ways from the aught6. You can go for a model 7 type rifle for up close work, or go the magnum route for ultra long range shite. As far as those calibers, .270 and .30-06 are based off the same case and aren't much different. 7mm-08 is a .308 necked down to 7mm and there's not much difference between them. They are short action cartridges which means the rifles will be shorter than their lpng action counterparts. The belted magnums are good for 300+ yard shooting deer and for elk. They are usually 26" barreled with very long actions.

If you are asking me, they all do the job almost equally well. I dont know much about the 7mm-08, but the 30-06 is king in my family for deer, the .270 is my personal favorite because its a flatter shooter and has less recoil than the rest, and the .300 gives you longer range and a heavier round for big game. And enough recoil to throw my skinny arse around. I would say the other wildcard would be the .308, a short action cartridge that lets you have a shorter, carbine type firearm that you can handle easily and still shoot at longer ranges. ETA, see above post. Didnt know that about the 7mm-08. I do know that for me, there is a noticeable difference in recoil between the .270 and 30-06, but for anyone over 90lbs, it shouldnt be much of an issue.

I had a 7mm-08 and bought a new 30-06 last year so you know my choice. I already had a 30-30 or I would have gone with one of those though.

So for a longer range rifle, it'd need be a 7mm mag or a 300 mag?
