Seriously, the kids love it. It's all in good fun for Christmas spirit. I don't look at it as some kind of discipline strategy.

We are doing it for my 2 year old. It's not about getting her to be good for us. She gets so excited when she sees the elf in a different spot. So for us it's about the excitement of Christmas approaching.

My kid likes the idea and it only takes a small amount of effort. Of course, if you don't want to make any effort for your child to enjoy something then you could just get on a message board and make disparaging comments about what others think is a fun concept.

There is no huge mess required. That something that parents are doing to try and have fun. The basic premise is simple.
Each night when everyone goes to bed th elf flies back to the north pole and tells Santa if you were good or bad, then he flies back and finds a new hiding spot. Short of moving the elf once a day, you don't have to do anything.
Any other "messes" are all in good fun.

You've got some issues dude, and you're letting them close your mind to some fun ideas around Christmas that your kids might enjoy. I'm not using an elf to create Christmas magic. And by the way "Magic" is also created from the tree and gifts, carols, lights, etc. Are you "using" them to create magic too? GTFO.
ETA: and I assure you, my kids fully understand the religious aspects of Christmas and that they come first and foremost. That doesn't mean they can't enjoy the other aspects as well.

It's fun, but if your Christmas is filled with only things you NEED, I hope your kids like getting wrapped canned goods, vitamins and airconditioning for christmas.

its so dumb and creepy , I love it because Xmas aint my favorite time of the year. The elf allows me to be Mischievous and have some fun with the kids. I guess I drank the kool-aid on that one

I was responding to the guy who said that not having an elf is short changing your kids on Christmas magic. Sorry, I just don't like the creepy little fricker or anything that it represents. And the more I hear people who drank the elf aid talk about how awesome it is and how Christmas is less without an elf, the more I hate it. JMO.
