| Geithner says Obama will throw the US over Fiscal Cliff if rich don't get soaked (Posted on 12/5/12 at 3:39 pm)
Just on CNBC. Interviewed by Steve Liesman. No transcript yet. Liesman noted the relatively small amount of revenue that isolated upper bracket taxes would bring. Liesman pointed out that in the big picture it seemed a very minor area to threaten an overall deal. Asked Geithner point blank, "Would the President take the country over the Fiscal Cliff based only on that one issue?" Geithner's answer, "Absolutely."

I think Obama wants to go over the cliff, he just wants to be able to blame it on the republicans...

He's bluffing. Then again, maybe Obama actually has enough 'revenge' in his heart to hurt the country if he can't hurt the rich.

This... Then next year he will propose all of the original Bush tax cuts (minus the top 2%) so it will forever be known as the 'Obama Tax Cuts'. What Repub will vote against new tax cuts at that point?

Think about who gets screwed if we hit the cliff. The military will get cut. Taxes go up on everyone who pays taxes. The GOP gets the blame. Obama has to be jizzing in his pants.

I think he wants to go over the fiscal cliff in order to raise taxes on the middle class. He'll blame republicans for raising taxes on the middle class in the process of protecting the "rich". He will then propose a tax cut on the middle class this summer...which will fly through congress. The end result, he gets to claim the Rs were responsible for raising taxes on everyone. O gets to take credit for a tax break on the middle class and he gets to raise taxes on the so called rich by default. It is actually a pretty brilliant plan.

Lets face it...Obama wants to go over the cliff. That way he gets his tax hike, can blame Republicans, and begin the push for a 2014 House. Then 2014-2016 look the frick out

No, Obama is not bluffing. Here is the scenario: 1. Obama wants to go over the cliff and blame it on Republicans. 2. The middle class starts seeing their smaller checks with more withholding. 3. New Congress is installed at same time in Jan. 4. Obama presents initiative to lower middle class tax rates to 'pre- fiscal cliff' levels. Dares GOP House to block it. 5. GOP house goes wobbly. Doesn't want to be painted as having raised taxes. So, Obama gets what he initially proposed. Bush tax rates remain in play except for the rich. There is no way around this for the Reps. They could amend the Obama initiative to include tax cuts for the rich as well, but he would only veto that. And don't anybody talk about bills originating in the House. Obama don't give a shite about the constitution.

Blaming the GOP might last a little while but Obama will have to deal with the consequences of failed leadership. Those consequences will be a double dip recession under his leadership, or lack of, and the monthly rise in unemployment for at least two quarters. After we go off the cliff he's going to have to work with congress to cut middle class tax rates and increase spending that he wants. He and the Dems will be consumed with this and he'll get no chance to implement his second term agenda (whatever that is). This will play into the mid-term elections where the GOP will gain the senate and greater control of the house. And they will, because Dems do not come out to vote during the mid-terms. From 2015 to 2016 Obama will be a lame duck. So, please go off the cliff. This will ensure Obama gets nothing done from 2013 through 2014.

Then they should pass a bill that allows the "wealthy" tax cuts to expire by 75%. Don't know why they are fighting this so hard.

reid will stop anything going to his desk he won't sign, so they can pin it on republicans. I think he is bluffing. if obama plays hard ball and gets a deal, he wins. if we go off the cliff, obama proposes middle class tax cut. he either gets it, and he wins. Or forces republicans to vote against it. And he wins. Obama is stacked, republicans are fricked.

Over the cliff is an inevitability...cuts in the military, higher taxes and inflation (printing) will be the norm in order to support necessary government social services, as the private economy goes south. It'll hurt, but we can weather that storm. The real cliff will be when the interest rates go up along with hyper-inflation, and the world dumps our spoiled asses.

100% for it. This thread is more about malignant rationale and the blame game.

OK, I think I have the GOP strategy down. You can scroll up and read my scenario. The GOP realizes this is Obama's plan. So, they can go ahead and raise taxes on the rich. Give Obama that. Then they can claim since they broke their pledge he can come forward with concessions on crap like wanting to have total elimination of debt ceiling. If he doesn't aqueiesce then he has PR problems. He will seem like the totally unreasonable person. Does he care? Probably not. Obama wants to raise taxes on the middle class...that's where the big money is. So, if the GOP agrees to give up the rich they deprive Obama of what he really wants.
