IMHO, there has never been a cartoonist more profoundly entertaining than Bill Watterson. Calvin and Hobbes made you Laugh, made you smile, made you think.
His social commentary was both chortle inducing as much as it was provocative. Each panel a work of unadulterated brilliance.
And he didn't beat you over the head with heavy handed allegory, didn't resort to cheap parlor tricks to keep you entertained, he simply painted a path for you, and invited you to join a boy and his tiger as they lazily ambled down it.
You want a lesson in philosophy, comedy, art, writing, and the human psyche?
Take an day off and read Calvin and Hobbes.

I love C and H. It really is the greatest comic strip IMO.
I love the Hobbes and Bacon ones that Pants Are Overrated did online.

I can't remember the last time a topic made me more nostalgic. C+H was the best comic ever. I have plans to get the hardcover collection one day, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Number 2 for me was Foxtrot. Really enjoyed it as well, but no comparison.
