Not talking down to you. Just that I'm likely almost twice your age...I'm 51...and I've dealt with this issue, and the cosequences arising from the lack of adequate coverage, for several decades. You have made a decision to acceopt certain risks and not insure for certain potential liabilities. Fine and as I said before, good luck to you.

If it's the uninsured motorists fault, then...well, they're shite out of luck. They are responsible for their own health coverage. It's not up to you to insure others. Why should you buy coverage for person x for the fault of person y...you're getting double whammy'd. As selfish as that sounds

I'm not a lawyer so help me out. How do I get sued by my passengers when an uninsured motorist is at fault?

Another issue is employer rejections. Your policy may or may not cover you for UM when you are hit while driving a vehicle provided for your regular use. The policies I deal with do. One of my partners deals with policies that do not.

is not always a clear, cut and dry issue. And, money, as well as tragedy, will make people do some otherwise strange shite.

Correct. And as I indicated, if you're really not at fault, it will be no more headache for you as the driver, than if you had UM coverage (you will get sued if you have UM coverage -- the notion that it's protecting you from that, is silly).

There are plenty of valid reasons for carrying UM coverage, depending upon your situation (many have been presented here) thinking it is some sort of great protection from what a passenger in your car may do to you is not really one of them.

Yeah, making money off it isn't a good idea. Nice way to get SIU involved.

So this part may have gotten lost in the conversation or it wasn't clear...what 'potential liabilities' are we talking here?

All scenarios if an an uninsured motorist hits me (let's assume fault is not clear):
- My vehicle? Covered under my collison coverage
- Myself? Covered under my health insurance...will be exposed to risk of copays and deductibles there. A few thousand $'s in most cases?
- My passengers? Covered under my bodily injury liability coverage up to limits. Might be exposed to further if sued by passengers who are injured. Does UMBI kick in here?
- Uninsured vehicle? Property damage liability kicks in up to limits.
- Uninsured driver & passengers of said driver injuries: If I am at fault or gray area, worst case I guess my bodily injury liabilities would kick in...or would be exposed to being sued. Again, does my UMBI kick in here? If I am not at fault, nothing.

We already talked about my disability being generous enough to cover lost wages.

So the way I see it, the only risk exposure I have is being sued beyond my bodily injury coverage from my passengers and the other vehicle passengers/driver. Does UMBI cover me?

Given the above,

Your passengers collect liability from whoever is at fault. Fault can be divided, so they can collect from both liability policies under some factual situations. They can collect from your UM to the extent that the other driver is at fault and underinsured. They cannot collect from your UM over your liability limits.

or gray area, worst case I guess my bodily injury liabilities would kick in...or would be exposed to being sued. Again, does my UMBI kick in here? If I am not at fault, nothing.
No, your UM is not involved in that. Those passengers only look to your liability, the host UM and their own UM.
