IMO the word socialism gets thrown around a bit too loosely. In both cases, Obama and the neo-cons, their actions fit corporatism muuuuuuch closer than socialism.
In Obama's case the corporations or large interest groups that he is aligned with are the auto industry (GM), big banking, unions, environmentalist, health insurance and lawyers.
In the neo-cons case the corporation or large interest groups they are aligned with are defense contractors, big oil, big banking (also), big ag, and health insurance.
I'm sure there are more corporations and institutions that these politicians are aligned with but that's all I can think of off the top of my head at the moment.
The point is, the way I see it is we live in a corporatist society where a symbiotic relationship between the corporations/institutions and politicians exist. Sure there are socialist and capitalistic tendencies but these tendencies ebb and flow within a corpratist framework.
The corpratist framework exist because the politicians gain MONEY and thus power and in return the corporations gain competitive protections (via regulatory barriers), monetary advantages (via tax loopholes, grants, loans, stimulus, etc.), inside information and many other favors I can't think of at the moment.
The bottom line is our politicians practice corporatism on both sides of the aisle despite their socialistic or capitalistic ideologies.
