My brother was a trumpet in the band that year, so the parents and I went to Tampa, I remember the pep rally the day before or something and that was the first time I saw that round orange mascot of Syracuse...game was aweful

Somehow, we didn't prepare for their 'option game'

if you knew bill arnsbarger you would know that lsu did not prepare much for that game. he was a pro coach that didn't like bowl games, period. to him, bowl games, esp more minor bowls, was exclusivly a reward for players and coaches alike. this hall of fame bowl, which i attended, was a "trip to the beach". lsu might have beaten a non option team on talent alone but arnsparger did not know how to defend the option and did not place a priority on it.

I'm getting the same vibe now

i don't think you can compare arnsbarger with miles at all. the peach bowl game against ga tech a few yrs ago proves that, esp when you use the hall of fame bowl as an example. miles actually wants to win his bowl games and views the opposition as a challenge. believe me, arnsbarger didn't lose a minutes sleep over the syracuse game.

I absolutely believe you.......

Especially since Arnsparger had been gone for a few years and Archer was the coach that year

I do agree that the trip to Tampa was a fun and games trip for the players. I was in college at the time and knew some of the players and they all admitted that football was just about the last thing on their mind at that game.

Funny tidbit:

Fast forward to June 1989 and the day summer workouts began. Team gathered in the weightroom with strength coach Milt Williams pacing until meeting start time. His first words out of the box:

"I hope the bowl game is still fresh in your memories, because you guys played like a bunch of pussies!!!!! Are you fricking kidding me? Well, you better get ready because that shits over!!!!"

The upper classmen were not happy......

it's ok to admit you had the wrong year.

or are you really saying that at the end of 1988 season in late Nov, the LSU team was fine with the HoF Bowl vs Syracuse. It wasn't until they woke up the morning of 1/1/1989 that they then suddenly felt shafted. Cool!

btw, you're also wrong that the team was "highly ranked". They'd just been blown out 44-3 by Miami. I was there, in the downpour. That was LSU's 3rd loss. Finished regular season 8-3. LSU was ranked #16 vs #17 Syracuse going into the bowl.

LINK

And, again, that team couldn't hold this team's jock, talent or coaching-wise.

Talent wise, comparatively speaking, I'm not sure I agree with you here. Sure, this year's squad may have the edge at most positions, but I wouldn't go so far as saying "couldn't hold this team's jock" for that '88 squad.

Coaching-wise, you are doubtlessly correct.

That was a pretty damn good team that LSU had assembled that year, but toward the end of the season you quickly realized that the wheels were starting to come off on the failed experiment that was young Mike Archer as a head coach of a major college football team.
