I had one dad covered in tattoos, even his face. Scary looking as hell but I walk in the room and he is cooing at his baby girl, smiling and speaking baby gibberish to her. Warmed my heart.

You know, that brings up an interesting question. Why did it warm your heart? Because you expected something totally different, some sort of monstrous person, but instead you saw a father enamored by his child?

And what if later that day the same father executed seven people in a ditch for the cartel?

Man is such a funny animal.

Honestly, I bet next year at this time your life will be way better. You'll look back and review how much you overcame, and be that much stronger.

Not offering platitudes, totally serious. Although that last sentence could be embroidered on a pillow....

I'm a daddy's girl so seeing dads be sweet to their daughters always warms my heart.

Dad was actually super nice and polite to us. One of those "don't judge a book by it's cover"

Get your head right. You're not the first person to go through this and you certainly won't be the last. Grab your nuts and move on with your life. The pitty shite will get you nowhere. I'm sorry for being harsh but WAKE UP! You have a lot to be thankful for and the sooner you realize that, the better.

re: LNST - Good night errbody edition

I would certainly hope so. For me not to make any emotional progress on my part after a whole year would be a failure on my part. I Don't wish to dwell on what could have been, or never was. Sure, the questions plague me in the lonely hours when the heartache comes on like a tidal wave, but that's inevitable. I'm on a roller coaster and there's not much I can do other than hang on for dear life as I watch the safety bar break loose and the bolts drop like rain.

Sure, "time heals all wounds" and "it gets Better". Platitudes, but truth.

Still, telling someone that the burning will eventually stop doesn't make walking through fire any more pleasant. It's the fundamental disconnect between what I know intellectually and what I feel that is the damnable thing.

re: LNST - Good night errbody edition

I was sitting in my car outside the Kelly Projects in Houston. Really rough area. This teenage kid knocks on my window and I freak. Then he says "Girrrl, you look fabulosss today" does this little Men on Film snap thing and walks off.

I thought I was about to be shot, instead I walk away with a compliment.

Same thing happened a couple to times where I'd go to different rough areas of town. I'd think one thing about this kid, and turns out he's helping me to parallel park. Honestly it was more about their age then race or the location. I'm ageist like that.

Think of a swarthier version of the old LA gang types. Bouncy cars with a little bit of a gut on the older ones... Lots of trimmed fu manchus on the younger ones. Wife beaters and boots.

This is the Cali model...

Texas model wears work boots (cockroach killas out on the town) and usually a straw hat if any.

A cholo can probably fix your car with stuff he finds in your kitchen.

Of course. I also enjoy seeing a fathers love for his children.

I'm sure he was. People tend to be that way when they are around their children and in a safe place.

I was more commenting on the duality of man, how he can be loving father, and at the same time cold-blooded killer. The thought popped into my head that "the SS had families they loved as well."
It's just the bizarre nature of reality, how we try to pigeonhole everything, but in truth, there are really no "bad men" or "good men", only men and the form they exist in in the moment.

re: LNST - Good night errbody edition

TT05, you should have seen me in Kenya So on the drive from Nairobi to Meru(4 hour drive) our van breaks down and we are stranded on the side of the road. Well most people there don't have cars so they walk everywhere. And they don't have the personal space issues we do so tons of people would walk right by our van, looking into the windows out of curiousity.

Keep in mind the area of BR I grew up in. So seeing lots of black people walking close to your vehicle made me a lil paranoid Everyone else in my group must have thought I was the most racist person ever cause I'm scared we are all gonna get mugged and shot.

Pity shit? I've never asked for pity. I try to be pithy actually, but when people ask I give candid answers.

Perhaps I come across differently than I perceive. That was a legitimate statement on the nature of man, not some "poor me" analogy.

Yea, personal space doesn't exist in the 3rd World. And there is no shame in fully staring at women either. I call it the Rapist Stare. In the US I"d be like"got a problem? walk away!" but here they wouldn't understand.

and it's not weird that you'd feel uncomfortable in a new country that isn't some Western land.

Blech. I have to go run some errands in a minute. Guys here have been full on creepy lately, and I dread going outside alone now.

You know that I understand that. All I can tell you is that a lot of us have walked through that fire and we are doing just fine. Life isn't always easy but I'll take it over not having any life at all.

I know the rapist stare. That is the "creepy Mexican guy at the gas station that doesn't speak English and stares at you and licks his lips while you pump gas"

In Kenya if you tried to back away from someone to have more personal space they just move closer to you

They're not done with you yet.

Yup. I've said that Mexicans and Egyptians have a lot in common many times while living here.

Same here. It's the land of the close talker. And man on man hand holding action

I get that and I meant no disrespect. I'm not so obtuse that I think no one else besides me has gone through and survived this, and I'm sorry if it came across that way. It was not my intention.
