| Passport needed on any US flight? (Posted on 12/4/12 at 7:52 pm)
I was told, starting January 1, that you have to have a passport on any flights even if you stay in the US...is this true?

could be an issue after jan 15 LINK
quote:
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Walking up to the TSA checkpoint in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, there is a sign that reads "3 Simple Steps to Security" which explains to passengers about getting their ID ready, removing liquids, and taking off their shoes. However, a new federal law could make step one, showing your ID, a little trickier for Louisiana residents. "If nothing changes then a passport is required and travelers will have to get a passport to travel on that day and beyond," said Baton Rouge Metro Airport representative Jim Caldwell. The day Caldwell is referring to is January 15, the day the Real ID Act goes into effect. The federal law creates federal standards for the state identification process, including putting a seal of approval on the driver's license to make it apparent that it is in compliance. Other stipulations of the Real ID Act include sharing the ID information in a kind of national data base. [...] Louisiana is one of seven states that passed a law prohibiting its agencies from implementing the Real ID Act.

Domestic flights leaving Louisiana, you'll need a passport. Not all states since some states are complying with a federal law involving drivers licenses. You'll also need a passport to enter federal buildings in Louisiana.

Not true at all. There is no way you are going to need a passport for ANY domestic flights this coming January.

Is there a pending lawsuit? Because the federal law was passed in 2005 I believe. From the above article, seven states opted out forcing its citizens to provide a passport when boarding.

We'll go over this again... Identification is not required to pass through security.

I have been wondering about this law too. We have passports, so no worries. But will poor people be given free passports now so they can go on vacation?

Identification is required to retrieve your ticket by the airline. It isn't required to go through security. It is the airline's responsibility to ensure the person holding the ticket is who they say they are.

Not really a passport, just a form of ID that meets requirements of a federal ID. And golfer is 100% correct, no requirement for an ID. Just have to satisfy the airline/airport in proving who you are.

So if I print my ticket at home, I'll get through security with no issues?
