re: Youth employment at all time low...what's your story?

Age 12 to 13 - lawn mowing, pressure washing, cool sealant on roofs

13 - 14 construction worker (iron worker) helper for my dad, meanest SOB ever and made school not seem so bad. Painted for part of the summer.

15 auto detailing for a company

16 through college - auto detailing (personal business)
If working for my dad wasn't motivation, washing cars in the 32 degree weather was.

2 part time jobs in college and washed cars on weekends.

worked in a prison as a medical student as "the doc". Motivation to not get arrested. Made $150 for an overnight stay. The rats were as big as nutria.

I've worked since I was 15 years old. I'm 47 now and am still going strong.

I am not the guy will call the youth lazy. Quite the opposite. There are just very few opportunities these days.

Elections have consequences.

Youths work for entry level, low paying jobs.
Those jobs today are taken by Mexicans.
If you don't speak spanish you can't work productively with them.
They will work for those low wages - in fact, middle aged Mexicans will work for those wages.
Would you want your daughter working at McDonald's and be the subject of a bunch of slobbering non English s[peaking individuals.
Like it or not that is reality.

I'm 40 and you can count on two hands how many months I've worked before I turned 22. I was a lazy kid but have a better work ethic than most people my age. I don't think working your arse off as a kid makes you a better employee later on. I think it is partly a genetic desire work, as well as a foundation laid down by your parents to succeed. Add a little healthy amount of competitive nature and you got a contributing member of society.
My bro-n-law works his kids dick in the dirt, saying that it will make them successful. I think he is making his kids think he is a major prik.
