| First boat (Posted on 12/4/12 at 11:15 am)
I am looking to buy my first boat. I have fished all my life with friends and family, but I can finally afford a boat and have a question. I am looking at this boat with a yamaha four stroke 25 on it. Would that be completely under powered? I typically fish for bass, perch, specks, and reds. I know the boat wouldn't be a speed demon, but would this be enough power for 2-3 people + gear? I am also just getting into hunting, so it may be used for that as well. Any info would help. Thanks

I like Lakesports and Seaarks because of their wide transoms and deep gunnels in the aluminum boats. Sea Ark Lakesport

Probably still a little under powered. Def do not get the 25. ETA: I have a 17.5' aluminium skeeter. Probably a good bit heavier than the one you are looking at, but best I can do it 45 mph alone with a "light" load. Worst thing you can do when buying a boat is short yourself on power. Buy the bigest the boat will allow, or you can afford.

When I had my 16' 48" Polar Kraft, it had a 40hp 2 stroke yamaha, no console. Full throttle with me in the boat alone was almost too fast.

I don't see myself ever needing to go 45. I just want to make sure the boat is able to get on plane under load without much difficulty. I will likely never run wide open anyway.

Well the one that is sitting in a bay outside of my office must be the lemon to end all lemons. The console wants to fly off every time you go over 25mph, and its rides terrible.

I've been shopping for aluminum boats for about a year while I continue to patch my old Boston Whaler. At 25, that boat would be under powered. Put at least 40 or a 50 on it, especially with the side or center control. The boat is rated to 60. You are considering putting less than half the power for which it is rated. You will likely regret that decision.

Yes. It's not mine, but have used it enough to make myself go out and buy a fiberglass boat so I never have to set foot in that thing again.

Should be good with the 40 then. I tend to make long runs in my boat, doesn't bother me, so WOT is a must.

if you can afford it really the Laguna Tiger is the best made aluminum boat I've ever been in. The Laguna Tiger is made by Duckmaster boats and they do make other boats besides the laguna Tiger. Boats are made in Texas LINK Here's their smaller fishing boats.

Minimum 40 hp. Ideal is a 50 hp. Remember that being underpowered will rape you on fuel costs. And strain on the motor will cause you to shell out money later as well. Get a 50 Mercury.

Since youve never owned one, I will tell you a little secret. Anything under the max rating, so in this case 60 hp, will not be enough in the next year or two. Everyone says what your saying on their first boat. It will cost more in the long run to have to upgrade also. ETA: Congrats on the new boat.
