re: Converting LakeP into freshwater

I can post 20 years worth of 5 man limits all day long, go back in the afternoon and and limit on the reds.
I can fish the Lake Pontchartrain estuary any time off the year and have a pretty good chance to do good.
I catch at Manchac
I catch at the trestles
the Causeway
The Rigilets
Lake Catherine
MRGO
Intracoastal
Lake Borgne
Seabrook
Lake Maurepas
Bayou Lacombe
Slidell

I've caught fish everywhere and the really cool thing about this estuary is there's always somewhere to go to find the fish if you know how to pattern them.

I honestly can't say the same thing about any other waterways and I fish them all.

Well can all at least agree that they should blow all the levees south of BC?

re: Converting LakeP into freshwater

First off this thread is full of more fail than your average rant thread.

For those that think the lake sucks PLEASE keep thinking that way. Hope they NEVER advertise fishing in the lake it's bad enough now.

The only thing I think is wrong is where I believe Meaux said the lake area is superior to Venice. I have to disagree there. However it's a great area, bass, bream, sac-a-lait, trout, reds, etc... tarpon

But yeah it sucks should be a freshwater lake

Drove the Causeway last Saturday and there were no less than 10 boats between each crossover. I counted 17 from the drawbridge to the next northbound crossover

I can guarantee you Lake Pontchartrain/Lake Borgne/Rigolets/Intracoastal/MRGO/Manchac area has more sport fishing than Grand Isle & Venice has combined

far be it from me to argue with the great fish skinner, but i'd like to see the stats that back this statement up.

I fish everywhere.Hell,Buras is my favorite place to fish. It's because of the proximity to the states two most populated cities which makes the estuary more crowded as far as fishermen goes.
But,I have no scientific data to support my observations so just take em as so,just an opinion.

re: Converting LakeP into freshwater

Lake P would greatly benefit from an annual introduction of freshwater into its basin. Either via Bonne Carre, Maurepus project, or La Branche. Latter two would be best due to the filtration of nutrients before hitting lake.

I fished it a bunch before Katrina, not much since my buddy lost his home on Carr Drive. Better than Venice or GI not sure about that one. At times maybe, but the ride to the 8 mile hump from launch puts me on snapper, mangys, lemons out of GI and that's after I caught my limit of specks without getting my ankles wet without needing a boat.

got ya!! Personal experience is usually more beneficial than stats anyway.

I only questioned it because I know you fish that area a lot I thought maybe some entity had actually studied it.

never fished Lake P, so I'll defer to Meaux's experience on that one. I've fised Venice though and I don't know of any area in THE WORLD that offers what it does.

All of the areas around the lakes got hit with salt water from the hurricanes in the past 10yrs and the trees didn't take too well to it

Everywhere in South LA would benefit from the fresh water/nutrients from the river, just hasn't been implemented on a large scale yet

I fish both relatively enough...about the only opinion i have is that you can probably catch a little bit bigger trout in lake P at certain times of the year but other than that lake P doesn't compare to venice...specks, bass, reds...just doesn't compare

Much better option would be to run a fresh water through Maurepas WMA and make that healthy again...

I have a want for this

I fish everywhere from Big lake to Point Au Chens to Cocodrie,Grand Isle,Buras,Venice,Delacroix. Lake Pontchartrain is every bit as diverse as the rest of these places if not more than most of them.I'll catch Bass in the CARR drive canals,Eden Isles then bounce out to the bridges for flounder, specs then to the L&N bridge for all the redfish you want.

I'm really talking about inshore species since I don't go offshore.

re: Converting LakeP into freshwater

It doesnt compare to any of the places i have listed. It doesnt have that much to offer in the way of reds and a good day in the lake is a bad day in most other areas as far as specks. Yes I will give that it does hold the hogs though.

How good of an area do yall think it good be if it was converted? Toledo Bend good? Could bring a lot more people and $ than some of yall are thinking.

They have been talking about this since as far back as I can remember. They have diversions, just don't use them to their full extent or sometimes at all. Politics and money are always a hindrance

re: Converting LakeP into freshwater

The state of LA has been looking into doing it for years. The idea of putting a "great wall" across it for flood protection purposes is the idea. The fish and animal people dont like the idea so much though.
