| Converting LakeP into freshwater (Posted on 12/4/12 at 10:38 am)
Was talking with buddy while fishing down in Dulac about how I wish LakeP was a better area since I live close to it. He brought up an interesting idea. Put a control structure down in the Rigolets and make it a fresh water lake. Would attract a lot of big bass tournaments, and would help the duck hunting in the area greatly. I know there are probably a lot of things I am missing why this wouldn't be a good idea, I am just bringing it up theoretically. However there is not an overwhelming sport fishing base in the lake, not much of a shrimp harvest that I am aware of, I think they do decent on the crabs. Lets discuss, good idea, dumb idea?

I've alway said flood out New Orleans. Would make a great speck and redfish lake, and would be easier than what you're proposing.

Much better option would be to run a fresh water through Maurepas WMA and make that healthy again...

You may suck at fishing, because I can tear up the specks in Lake P almost whenever I want. Also the duck hunting is not bad where you can access it. We used to lease land near the rice fields in madisonville, and destroyed ducks there. I have buddies that shrimp the lake and are pretty successful at it. Also I dont know if you've ever ridden a boat in the lake but there are crab traps everywhere.

Like I said I do not know how the shrimping is on the lake. And as far as there being a a lot of sport fishing, I guess there is a lot more on the south end of the lake. North end doesnt have much to speak of, yea you can fish the bridge and trestles but its very hit or miss. When I think of places with a big sport fishing base I think GI, Venice, all there area around there, not so much the lake. And yea I should restate that, they do very well with crabs.

I can guarantee you Lake Pontchartrain/Lake Borgne/Rigolets/Intracoastal/MRGO/Manchac area has more sport fishing than Grand Isle & Venice has combined and yes all of these areas I listed are fishable from any launch on Lake Pontchartrain and are all considered the Lake Pontchartrain estuary.

I have never fished the lake. I just think it would be a battle that mother nature would win.

Maybe on the south end in the rigolets, there is a reason why tons of people living around the lake, either north or south, keep camps on the coast. Venice,GI,Dulac, etc>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>LakeP

Also if you think the rigolets or causeway are hit or miss. Introduce yourself to a Mr. Dudley Gohagen. Those areas quickly become more hit than miss. We used to fish it every morning over the summers, and hardly ever came back without at least a decent load of trout.

The south end of the rigolets is considered the northeast side of Lake P estuary
