re: Running vs Cycling

I used to be big into cycling like 10 years ago. I had one of those cool bmx bikes

Do you do bmx races too? I'd say they're way harder than your kind of cycling because y'all don't do tricks

As someone who claims to have proof of your superhuman Armstrong like performance, you sure are demanding of others.

Absolutely. There are plenty of videos on Youtube of various climbing competitions.

You are asking me to prove I have biked and ran.

are we arguing which one is harder?

I'll just say this, in running, you cannot draft, nor can you ever coast down a hill. 50% of your output is not dependent on your equipment.

I don't think there are amateur rankings in running. All this Cat3 and Cat4 amateur stuff is pretty absurd, IMO

Exactly. It's like people just ignore this simple truth.

Also truth.

wow more OT wisdom.

you do understand how this works right? as you gain fitness and skill (and win races) you move into higher (faster) categories. this gives new people a chance to win races without being blown away by the fast cat123 racers.

no of course you don't understand. its pretty absurd.

yeah it is pretty absurd

this kinda sounds like the "everyone gets a trophy" thing for Little League.

Yay! You won the slow people race!

so if you've worked your way all the way up to cat3 (takes at least 2-3 years of hard work) you favor people who have never raced before mixed into your 80 person criterium? what could possibly go wrong?

Bingo.

I spent last weekend watching runners complete 100 miles in the woods, and I was in awe.

There are no shortcuts in running. There's no coasting. You can't go drop a couple of grand on something that will allow you to use less energy to move faster. It's all you.

I don't know why there has to be a pissing match between the two though. Neither is easy. I prefer running.

seems that their should be "stock" cycling races to make it more even. Train with whatever you like, but you are all racing on the same bike.

There honestly isn't much difference between a $2,000 bike and a $10,000 one.

The Little 500 in Bloomington Indiana, the setting of the movie "Breaking Away" requires all teams to use the same exact bikes.

Most racing that involves vehicles will have big advantages for those that can afford the high end super light, super strong gear. Even NASCAR, which is supposed to cancel all that out with it's gear requirements, still has teams with deeper pockets having an advantage over smaller teams. That's just the nature of the beast.

In cycling, the bike does add some benefit to the racer, but believe me, it's not a gauranteed victory. I've had my arse handed to me by guys on lesser equipment, just as I've beaten guys on MUCH nicer rigs.
