When will the democrats get serious

...about reducing the deficit?

Shouldn't this be their opportunity to demonstrate that they are the grown ups in the room?

Instead we have the WH rejecting a pretty good starting point for negotiations ang backing away from Simpson Bowles while Reid publicly thrashes any plan that touches social security, Medicaid, and Medicare.

Where are the democrats willing to cut spending other than the military?

Sad times for America

If only we could've gotten Bush a few more terms we'd have dealt with this pesky deficit by now...

That's the problem we did....Obama 1 and Obama 2 are Bush 3 and 4th terms.

Right after they close Guantanamo and put Congressional negotiations on CSPAN.

"Deficits don't matter"- Dick Cheney

And it certainly didn t matter to Right Wingers when the GOP was cutting taxes & dragging the US into 2 wars without the ability to pay.

Going backto Reagan deficits have never mattered to the GOP . Just keep cutting taxes ,but continue spending.

You still seem confused.

Many conservatives have always cared about over spending. Hence, why tea party folks started to try and run off GOPers who were spendthrifts themselves.

false premise...Obama has already gotten serious about cutting spending...

Obama slowed spending more than any of his predecessors.

What we have is a revenue problem that can be easily fixed by going back to the rates we had under Clinton. The real question should be when are Republicans going to get serious about deficit reduction.

Your math skills suck.

Spending is currently 25% of GDP. In US history, the highest federal revenue as a percentage of GDP was 20% under Clinton in 2000. Our revenue under Clinton only averaged 18%.

How the frick did bush get re-elected then?

he won the "conservative" vote. And then the repbulicans nominated mccain, who was a big spender in 2008.

The republicans are only pushing for smaller gov't b.c obama spends like two drunken sailor on leave, as opposed to bush's single drunken sailor. And they know they need to stir up the base.

its fricking ridiculous. Republicans are not the party of smaller gov't. That party doesn't exist.

To the OP, you expected democrats to cut spending? What kind of crack are you smoking?

Herp derp. Of course we had the ability to pay, the fed gov simply issued debt like it always does in wartime. This notion of declaring war on a "credit card" is a good talking point to manipulate the ignorant masses (yourself included) but it doesn't really hold a lot of weight.

Also, you mental midgets always talk about two wars, as if there was ever any substantial opposition to the first one. Doesn't matter, it's good to say "two wars" for political points. It's more about what team you're on because you are a despicable cunt.

With nondiscretionary spending at the level it is, of course we will increase debt any time we have "kinetic military action."

You seem to be having difficulty with the word "many" and what it means.

Oh, and also, it aint like anyone who was pro-small govt was given an option in the Bush re-election. Who would they have voted for if small govt would've been the deal breaker?

quote:

he won the "conservative" vote.
That group had the choice of one spendthrift and another, bigger spendthrift.

Me thinks you hit upon why conservatives have sucked it up and voted for Republicans in the past.

quote:

Republicans are not the party of smaller gov't. That party doesn't exist.
I COMPLETELY agree. But, I addressed how conservatives feel. Conservatives unfortunately, have been given two choice for quite some time. Bad and worse. They've tended to pick bad.

Why would they get serious when they were voted voted back into office by the 51% of voters who don't care about the deficit? They can do whatever they want when the majority of voters doesn't care---in fact, lauds them for it. So they'll continue to redistribute money they don't have, portraying themselves as Robin Hood heroes, until the whole shebang comes crashing down.

No, I know what it means. If conservatives were serious about keeping spending under control, they could have pressured bush to be a smaller spender. But they didn't. They didn't offer a primary challenger. They didn't scream about his spending, in fact, they defended it. Repeatedly.

I am not giving conservatives a pass on this, as they don't deserve one. In fact, they deserve quite a bit of blame for our current situation. If the tea party movement had arisen in 2003 instead of 2009....we might not have this horrible deficit/debt to deal with.

Democrats, and obama share a lot of the blame too but you know, you expect throwing cash around from the democrats.

Dude. LOTS of conservative decried a LOT of that shite. No child left behind...the prescription drug plan. Shit, where were you?

Agreed, but it didn't.

I think that it ended up taking Bush's terms to finally tell conservatives that simply voting the lesser of two evils wasn't enough.

quote:

Which again is the reason that the conservatives in the masses just tended to vote for the least bad of two choices.

Sadly, I really don't think a true "conservative" candidate is the answer either because the whole fricking population is addicted the the Federal TIT. Even many people who think of themselves as "conservative" Truth is, many "conservatives" are just liberals who like different spending.

Oh, i watched the drama unfold. And it was more like groans than screams of pain.

The only item I care about is the deficit. i don't really care if taxes are high, as long as the deficit is low. I was screaming my head off in 2004, and was completely ignored by "conservatives" both on the internet, and IRL.

I agree. This is why i stopped caring who wins. Won't matter, we are so fricked and we are all addicted to spending.

To me, both parties are driving towards the cliff and more insultingly, BOTH fricking KNOW it.

Only difference I see is one of them is driving a Camry with the pedal to the medal and the other is driving a Corvette.
