Gays and lesbians are free to get married in California and in every other state in the U.S. today if they want to.

Are you stoo-pid?

I support the rights of the states to decide. Whether it be for or against.

This, the feds need to stick to armies, navies and interstate highways. Faux marriage, abortion and others just leave to the states.

Some will make it legal, some won't. Everyone gets to vote with their feet and have a place to live where they can be happy. One size fits all rules make half the people miserable and serves only to stoke anger and divisiveness.

What's the point of State's rights?

To give the people of a particular state the right govern themselves more autonomously and create more freedoms that fits with its culture. For example, smoke pot without the fear of being arrested by the feds, drink at the age of 18 without the fear of losing highway funding, the freedom to run it's own healthcare system without federal government dictates or ransoms, the freedom to permit businesses without repercussions from the NLRB via the federal government, etc.

It's been a little over four years since the State of California (voters) stomped out the freedom to marry for gays and lesbians in California. Hopefully the SCOTUS wants to be on the right side of history and kills this law tomorrow.

What about the voters in the recent election that "stomped" on the freedom of their citizenry to define marriage as they see fit?

marriage itself should be left completely to the churches and independent of government. If churches want to marry 2 gays, let them. Any two people who want the benefits currently associated with marriage- including those who get married in the church-must apply for a government civil union for those benefits.

This is the right answer.

re: SCOTUS to release fate of Prop 8 case tomorrow

Update:

The Supreme Court has issued its order list for today, and neither the Prop 8 case nor any of the DOMA cases are mentioned at all. So there's been no action one way or the other, and we go back to playing the waiting game. The next conference for the Justices is this coming Friday, December 7, so it's unlikely we'd hear anything on any of these cases before then.

I honestly just do not understand why some politician on any side of the isle wont just nut up and say this. it's a compromise. and it takes the debate off the table so people like toddy will have to actually think about the other issues when deciding who to vote for.

because.. the Republicans have lost their way, and think they have to pander to the extreme in order to bring in the votes.. I swear if they had been the ones to do what YOU just said, the Republican candidate would have probably been a different person, and they would have had a better chance.. so stupid, I really wish they would do this.

Friend of mine on facebook argued with me for 5 hours about how MARRIAGE was defined by GOD and that only a man and woman should be married by the government, screw civil unions, they aren't biblical and they are stupid! ... was blatantly angry about the whole thing, couldn't stand the idea, etc.

She voted for Obama.. because at the end of the day, that really wasn't as big of a deal as everyone wanted it to be.

Sorry to hear that bro.. keep waiting, hopefully good news is on the horizon, you wont have to wait that much longer, just don't get so attached to the possibility of it happening and it'll be that much bigger for ya once it happens.

it's a hot button issue that gets folks to the polls. neither side really wants an actual resolution.

A question:

If gay marriage ends up being legal in all 50 states and gays are enshrined just like any other minority in all statutes preventing discriminiation, what issues will become key voting issues for people like you?

Will economic issues start to matter you or will you basically become like blacks and be destined to just hand your vote to Dems forever in gratitude regardless of how they stand on other issues going forward?

You say that, but I honestly think once people actually get to the polls to vote, it makes 0 difference. the BIGGEST person who was against the gay marriage thing with the stupid chick-fil-a shit, voted Obama, because at the end of the day, she didn't care about the other stuff..

Just wanted to pop in and say I told you so. Friday is the last conference of the year, and they MIGHT get acted on then. The healthcare cases were listed 3 times before they were granted, and they constituted only 5 petitions. We have 10 here with everyone arguing for the grant of a different case, and most of them have some serious procedural flaws.

Prop 8 is one of the less likely petitions to granted, with Golinski being the most likely.

I think it is a state issue. My personal opinion on gay marriage is irrelevant.

I'm just going by what AFER and about ten other groups are saying. But if it makes you feel better to say "I told you so" then I'm happy for you.

When is the latest we will know if Prop 8 has been granted?

You can still get married in any U.S. state right now if you'd like to do so.

In actuality or theoretically? I mean, the judges usually try not to keep holding on to stuff forever, but theoretically they can hold it for as long as they want to.

In actuality, it all depends on how the vote goes down behind the scenes, and whether or not someone wants to dissent from the denial of cert. If someone dissents, then it could be February before we know.

Why are you so excited about this you started a thread?

Unless you are gay, who cares? Are you gay? If so you can still be gay and not be a progressive marxist democrat.
