re: WH rejects Republican Plan

They rejected it because they want to go over cliff. They'll keep blaming Repubs, while getting more tax revenue, that way. Its win/win, for them. Sucks for America.

If you're a true Republican you should want the fiscal cliff to take place because it includes large spending cuts and will put a big dent in our annual deficit. How does that suck for America? Cause your stocks will drop a little? It's time to pay up before we can never catch up.

That it does, but does nothing to reign in entitlements or reform SS/Medicare

I'm pretty sure it's being rejected b/c the Bush tax cut rollback for those making > 250k was excluded. Obama may have mentioned a time or two that this is a requirement.

Politically, I think the Rs have more to lose. They'll get the blame if we go over the cliff(and honestly, they should if they don't cave on that particular item - polls are pretty clear as was the election). They should cave, and put the ball in the president's court calling for "balance". "Where's entitlement reform?"

Taking money from successful people , not because it'll actual help the country get in fiscal shape , but because we want to stick it to the people who've been paying most of the taxes and funding most of the entitlements. OMG IT'S TOO FUNNY!

The Repubs came up with the same amount of revenue if they did increase the taxes on those making 250k.

So you're saying Obama just wants to say "I stuck it to the successful people"???

Let it go over the cliff. If that's what it takes to get spending cuts of ANY kind, then it's worth it.

It was only half the revenue that rolling back the bush tax cuts would generate.

The total would be 500 times greater than eliminating PBS for example.

PBS's budget over ten years is around $1.5B. Rolling back the tax breaks would generate approximately $800B over 10 years.

Ignoring the obvious drop in the bucket the tax increases would bring

Federal Government + Increased "revenue" = Increased Spending. Always and forever.

Right. Obama and the Dems are making a political calculation that they can blame going off the cliff on the GOP. That's probably going to work in the short run.

IMO going off the cliff will be better for the GOP politically in the long term (1 to 2 years). IMO the GOP will be in a much better negotiating position once off the cliff because they will be able to do things like tie tax cuts to entitlement reform (which Obama rejects). Not only that, the process of passing bills after the cliff will tie up any second term initiatives that Obama may have (whatever they are). Blocking Obama is a good thing.

"Rolling back the bush tax cuts" is not on the table from Obama, is it? Obama wants to roll back the tax cuts ONLY on the top earners not the entire tax cuts (which I would favor).

Raising the top tax rates on those couples earning over $250k/year will generate $43 billion/year according to the latest estimate I saw. Let's see, an annual deficit of ($1,200,000,000,000) and bring in an additional $43,000,000,000 will bring the annual deficit all the way down to ($1,157,000,000,000), or a reduction in the annual deficit of 3.6%.

Where is the other 96.4% going to come from?

See the problem now?

I wouldn't mind having the increased revenue earmarked for paying down debt - or excluded from spending increases. Actually I'd prefer it. But it doesn't really work like that. It's fungible.

The republicans need to get over rolling back the bush tax cuts. They need to push for reforming entitlements. This has public support. They included increasing medicare eligibility to 67 in their deal which is a good first step.

First it was "we need to increase revenue from" per Obama on the campaign. The GOP gave him revenue.

Now it's "we need to increase the top marginal rate" per Obama.

It's a moving target. The GOP will never hit it.

Because the inner city leeches of society voted for Obumbler at a 95% clip? And still only won by a few million votes?

re: WH rejects Republican Plan

I saw larger figures totaling $800B over ten years ...so excluding inflation, accounting trickery, etc. that's $80B per year.

The problem I have in this sort of deal is republicans clamor for lower taxes and smaller government...but when it comes time for the smaller government.....not so much. Republicans haven't cut a damn thing in 30 years.

I agree, increasing taxes is NOT going to solve the problem itself. Most articles I've read, shows I've seen, etc. suggest that both increased revenue and decreased spending are going to have to be a part of the solution.

No. He clearly campaigned on rolling back Bush tax cuts.

Ok, so roll them back..m6or everyone. Or was bush such a champion of the middle class that he put in some tax cuts that really helped them? Because that wasn't the narrative too long ago.

Well yeah.

Generally Reps = Dems. It's just that the Reps are slightly more fiscally responsible (in terms of going into debt) and both want to spend on their favorite programs. It's just a big fight over a pot of money and who gets to spend it.
