Correct. UMBI is very misleading. If you want pain and suffering, you will sue whether you have UMBI or not. UMBI is nothing more than unnecessary health insurance which you are already paying for if you have health insurance. It does not cover any damages to your vehicle caused by an uninsured motorist.

in 1983, i was knocked into a telephone pole by a hit and run driver 3 days before christmas. broke my leg and elbow. in the ER, my lawyer buddy asked me if i had UM. luckily i was in a company car and they had a ton of coverage. before i went into surgery the next day, i called my agent and bought it on my vehicles as well. the UM recovery helped me buy and renovate a rental property and it put me through law school with two small children in the house. that's my reason for buying UM.

No seriously. It says coverage for collision with another object. That doesn't include another vehicle (insured or not)?

Collision insurance covers vehicular damage to your own vehicle caused by an uninsured motorist. Your health insurance covers your own medical injuries. If you are a dirtbag and want to sue for pain and suffering, any cheesy personal injury attorney will help whether you have UMBI or not.

I do not believe this is correct... if you are at fault, your liability insurance pays for the other guys vehicle, while your collision insurance pays for your vehicle... if the other guy is at fault, his laibility pays for your vehicle, while his collision pays for his vehicle... if the other guy is at fault and has no insurance, you are shite out of luck unless you have uninsured motorist insurance which will pay for your vehicle (or meidcal bills if you have that coverage).... I am no insurance expert, but if you disagree, you need to schedule an appointment with your agent to discuss...

Can someone confirm that this is true, even if you carry comp and collision on your policy? Are you screwed on fixing your auto if you do not have UM?

UM is primarily if you're in a wreck underinsured motorist, i.e, driver hits you and causes 50K in damage and he only has 15/30. You recover the 15K from his insurance and the UM from yours which is equal to your policy amounts.

It's a nice way to get a few extra bucks from the insurance company. Typically they'll pay your medical bills via check to you. Then they'll turn around and subrogate the claim to your health provider. You can sometimes clip them for a few bucks when health insurance pays a lower rate but UMBI reimburses the full cost. Also, you can use UMBI to cover deductibles. Ultimately, it's cheap for a reason: it doesn't cover a lot that's not already covered. Best deal is to get full UM. Insurance companies hate it since they can only charge what it costs. They can't make a profit on it. Also, with McDill tenders and bad faith statutes, the UM claimant has significant leverage in settling a covered claim.

Collision still covers your vehicle, no matter who is at fault. You can decide to go thru the at fault guys coverage (if he has it) or yours. If you do not have collision and carry UMPD, in the quoted scenario, it will cover your damages up to whatever limit is stated in your policy and usually with a deductible. If you do not have collision or UMPD, you are SOL for your car. UMBI 1 will cover bills, lost wages, and/or pain and suffering. UMBI 2 is economic loss only (bills). Also FYI, UM coverage kicks in if someone is uninsured, OR if your damages exceed the at fault persons limits.

Cereal, if I have 50K in damage (which my vehicle isn't worth that much), and the driver that hits me covers only 15 of that..my collision doesn't cover the remainder?

Tbobby is a fool. Let's play a game. Pretend you're seriously injured in an accident caused by an uninsured driver. You can't work for 6 months while you undergo multiple surgeries and rehab. You lose your job. Does your medical insurance pay your rent, your other bills, ect while you're not working? I hope you know the answer. And, since you've lost your job, and you have no income, how can you pay your COBRA premium to keep your health insurance? You know the answer...you can't. What cheap, affordable coverage will help you satisfy these needs? UM coverage. Only an idiot drives a vehicle without as much UM as their budget will allow.

You'll file thru your policy so you'll get 100% all at once. The at fault folks will pay you $500, and the $14,500 to your company. You company will then eat the rest, or will file suit against the driver personally.
