If you already have very good medical insurance through another provider? Seems like lagniappe to get it through my auto insurance

It's unnecessary, but it never hurts to have it. Is it that much more premium with this coverage?

The 25% of drivers who are uninsured, and the other 60% with minimum limits. Cheap way to cover yourself for all the idiots out there.

Some jackass hits you without insurance, puts you in the hospital and out of work for a while, it would be nice to be compensated

Yeah, it protects you in case some jackass hits you that doesn't have insurance. Get as much as you can afford. I would carry at least $100k/$300k.

Absolutely get um. This is the single most important advice I give on a daily basis. Health insurance does not pay pain and suffering. Um is cheap. There's lots of uninsured/underinsured drivers out there.

I have it and if I remember correctly, that is what covered the hit and run on my car.

If you have health insurance, do NOT get UMBI.

basic uninsured motorist is not a bad idea, as there are a ton of uninsured folks in the south...as for uninsured motorist medical, I think the only reason to use that would be if you had someone in your car who did not have insurnace and you were hit by an uninsured motorist...possible, but not likely IMO...
honestly, I have always kinda had the same questions about any kind of medical insurance rider tacked onto vehicle insurance...never gotten a straight answer on why I needed it, either...

Health insurance does not cover "pain and suffering". Many, many people in LA want to make a claim for this, including plaintiff attorneys, that's just a fact. UMBI opens up that door.

Thay what I am thinking. I have VERY good health insurance.
Only thing I see it buying is coverage of ny passengers who may not have good health insurance. It sounds selfish but I would not be on the hook for them because it would be the uninsured persons fault. If it was my fault, my basic bodily injury coverage should be enough (25/50)....right?

Wrong. Umbi covers pain, suffering, loss of income, and other noneconomic damages. It's a must have coverage.
Please don't give insurance advice if you don't know insurance.
