it seems like the GOP needs to just keep sending over reasonable proposals like this one the DEMs will become the obstructionists the DEMs will have to admit they're thinking more of ideology than solutions

Then I vote for fiscal cliff. Let's get those frickers that got off the rolls in 2001 and 2003 to put some skin in the game. For all of Obama's bluff and bluster, THIS is what he fears the most, because "his" voters might start giving a shite about taxes and tax rates.

Why even put this out there? Obama has only said about 500 times he would oppose any measure which didn't include a tax increase on the top 2% and the Dems said yesterday nothing that did not raise rates on the top 2% would even be considered.
Why is that, you think? Why does the structure matter if the tax increases raise the same amount for "deficit reduction"?

The republicans should offer a new deal every day but never raising the rates if any brackets. Flipping the narrative is the only way that we can get a semblence of something accomplished.

Keep thinking that if it makes you feel better. The GOP will take the brunt of the blame whether you like/believe it or not. Period.

i agree i'd just keep offering proposals every time one is rejected and start to ask why they're being rejected

You DO realize that the Federal government ran at least a $1,100,000,000,000.00 deficit for FY2012. Once the actual numbers come in for FY2012, that number will be more like $1,300,000,000,000.00 Raising taxes on thoes eee'ville wich fowlkes will raise $70-80 billion/yr, if that much. That still leaves us in the hole for $1,020,000,000,000.00 just for one year. Now, pray tell me, how in the heck are we going to cover the rest of the federal deficit? Take every dime that millionaires & billionaires make and we still way short. Plus, lets don't forget, if the Fed ever raises interest rates, the yearly Federal deficit will start pusing $2,000,000,000,000.00 a year

I have said many many times I want entitlement reform and higher taxes across the board. I am practical though. Two things are clear (as already stated): 1. Dems won't pass anything without a relatively small tax rate hike on income for the top 2%. 2. We go over the cliff because the GOP refuses #1 above, they will pay the price in mid-terms. So, you decide the best course of action on this particular sticking point.

This is not true. And I assume you are referring to the fed funds rate as well. Not how it works. And I am out for the night. Same circles always end up going around and around here. Maybe the Russian fella can explain the interest part to you if he wants. He is a bit of an arse clown sometimes, but he does at least understand how that part works so he is useful at times.

What is the purpose of demanding a tax on a specific group of citizens? Taxing the top 2% isn't going to do anything for anyone. The only reason I could possibly see for doing this would be to tax small businesses at a higher rate which would increase their costs, put some out of business and force an overall higher unemployment rate. Essentially forcing the unemployed to rely more heavily on the government to survive.

The wealthy got the largest benefits from the past decade of rate cuts. Now letting the cuts expire for them seems reasonable IMO. This board disagrees, but this board is not always too bright.

The problem is that small businesses are taxed at the individual rate. Why is Obama intent on taxing the very businesses that are actually employing people right now?

So why not let ALL of those tax cuts expire since the wealthiest tax payers will be hurt the most? The answer is the lower and middle income tax payers whose federal income tax liability went to ZERO (estimated to be 17 million persons) will have to start paying taxes again and then they will know Obama and the Dems have been lying all these years when they have said the Bush tax cuts only benefitted the wealthy. It's been a lie the whole time.

So why wouldn't eliminating deductions be acceptable? The only thing I can think of is to protect some special interest group to allow them to continue to take advantage of unlimited deductions. True?
