| Baton Rouge Outboard Motor Repair, Who's Good? (Posted on 12/3/12 at 6:14 pm)
Looking to get my lower unit rebuilt...who's not going to frick me over. I've heard a couple people say David Wade, but judging from his website he seems like the Kirk's of the boating world, and I'd imagine the price and douche level is as high as Kirk's. So who do y'all recommend in and around BR?

What size and year of motor? Ascension Marine is good. Also Yellowfin Marine in Slaughter does great work with a quick turn around.

front to back boat service is decent. They all are expensive.

What kind of motor you got? There are some good independent shops around Gonzales that do good work. Don't know many in BR except front to back.

That is one I was talking about. Have done great work for me in past. BTW stay away from David Wade, not worth it.

It's just a little 25HP Tohatsu pull start. One of the bevel gears is chipped. The guy I just bought the boat from literally handed me a box with the lower unit parts and the lower gear case. I'm hoping to get the gear fixed and then it's essentially a free motor for me.

Look up the number to a guy name Byron Harris around Frech Settlement. He is without a doubt the best outboard guy around! He's worked on several motors for friends and family and has been doing it for 20+ years. He'll treat you right!

Byron is probably the best around, but may not want to mess with a box full of parts.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. A lot of names. Do these guys have shops or just look them up by first and last name in the phone book?

Not FTB or Charlie Ward. I know some people have had good dealings with them, but I, and countless others have been burnt by both. I used to own a Tohatsu Mega, I wanted someone familiar with Tohatsu's to work on this particular motor. That being said Simon's was who I went with. If they were closer to me I would use them again. If I'm not mistaken they are a Tohatsu rep/certified mechanic?

do not attempt to rebuild a lower unit yourself. There's three different pressed on parts in there and proper lash must be set with a dial indicator or else the gears won't mesh properly. frick, even I won't frick with a lower unit after watching Ray rebuild mine. He's on Florida Blvd. In Denham. Btw,have you tried pouring in some Seafoam yet.to see if it fixes your lower unit?
