I agree. The whole town is taking it hard. Just glad he is alive. That's a hell of a shot.

re: Horrible accident
The boat drivers dad dropped them off. On top of the accident, I'm sure he is going to have some explaining to do.

I agree.

Wife told me it was their first duck hunt. Not sure if that meant season or period.

re: Horrible accident
Neither. We crossed them a few weekends ago. They were underage but not their first rodeo. I don't think some of their parent know they are/were duck hunting in the past and that morning. shite we did the same thing when i was younger. Just fortunate i guess.

Good ol' redneck kids are probably safer than a lot of the city-slicker adult hunters we all see on a daily basis. Accidents are accidents.

re: Horrible accident
I was hunting on my own, squirrel and duck at a young age, very young. We were prob 10-11 yrs old, but I had been handling a gun with my dad since I was old enough to help him hold it and shoot at squirrels at prob 5 yrs old. This was an accident and the one kid that pulled the trigger doesnt reflect on the others experience. Ive been hunting with a friend and his friend and not known there hunting background. WIll look at this different from now on with myself and my kids.

re: Horrible accident
a duck blind is the last place you want to be with an inexperienced hunter or someone who doesn't know how to safely handle a gun. i absolutely refuse to get in a blind with some who i am not sure of.

I agree, lots of questions still left to be answered and investigations to be done, and this is probably not the best place for that to unfold. But assumptions based on age alone are not accurate, the fact that they were using lead shot(and I may or may not know of people who have done similar things at that age...and they all turned out pretty good) and knew that they could get in trouble for it, tells me this was not their first duck hunt, and probably knew a lot more about hunting than a lot of adults.

Prayers for all families involved, looks to be a long rough road ahead

15 is not too young. shite happens. I was deer hunting with a rifle at 11 on my own. And I know the one kid who was shot's family. I can assure you, he was no rookie. Not with that bunch.

Yep. My old man had me in the woods as soon as I got out of diapers. When my younger brother started tagging along he figured it was more efficient if I hunted alone while he took my brother. I was 8. He would tie me in a deerstand with a yellow rope and say "make sure it's got horns, mark the spot where you shot him good, and don't get down no matter what until I come back. If anyone comes by here and messes with you shoot 3 times in the air and I'll be here shortly."

I look back on it now wondering what the hell he was thinking.

That's not really a good legal defense. Just saying.

re: Horrible accident
I was duck hunting with 2 of my buddies from the time we were 13. Walked down to the creek and shot wood ducks before school. Still hunt with the same group 10 years later and I agree with not hunting with someone I don't know. Anytime we take new people we meet them the night before drinking beer and sitting by a fire. We've had some no go's before and that was that. Accidents are just that, but can be prevented 100% if you just take a few moments and look at your set up. We never stagger, and especially don't shoot over anyone's head if they are kneeling down. Always know how far you can swing before you have to stop. Duck hunting with 2 or 3 people is very dangerous, and I'm sure these kids have done it dozens of times before and just got cocky. It happens every year and it is such a tragedy that these boys have to always remember. Prayers for the family.

I wasn't trying to imply anything about the legality of it. Just stating there age (opposed to being 17 or whatever the legal age to hunt alone is) likely had little influence in the probability of that accident happening. A thread where someone is asking for prayers for those involved in an accident like this is probably not the place to bring up the laws they may have been breaking.

I don't want to be anywhere near an 11 year old, or even a 15 year old hunter unless they're closely supervised by an adult. I don't care how much experience they have. Anymore than I would want to go on a cross country trip with an 11 year old driver.
