re: This is why capitalism is unappealing to the majority

quote:

Dems 1950s were not communists

The Dems of 2012 aren't either but both believe in progressive taxation and social assistance. It wasn't until Democrats decided to incorporate blacks in public and private American life, that white voters rebelled against the Democrats.

quote:

The conservative movement was started by people like WFB and Goldwater. They were not from the South.

But they picked up a ton of voters after the 60's civil rights legislation. And Reagan capitalized on that resentment.

I'm right. I think a great deal of conservatives don't mind their medicare and even some love their medicaid.

Conservative have a problem with ALL of the Great Society.

I didn't inherit anything. My parents didn't even give me a great work effort. I learn that on my own. I do not feel any jealousy towards people who are given things by their parents who worked hard. I will be one of those parents. You probably won't be since you will give all your money to the IRS willingly. At least that is what I gather from your posts.

You have a frozen brain if that's what you gathered from my posts. That's the only logical explanation

If you want everyone to bow to the government and pay so much in taxes why don't you go first? Prove it can be done.

He's a receiver, not a giver. This is obvious from his posts.

You're like Mitt Romney when it comes to presidential elections, you can't win.

I've never been a receiver. Ever.

I love how receivers complain how the rich game the capitalist system to get ahead. When I did taxes in college peoples' brains would explode if they knew some of the things I saw the receivers do to game the welfare system. Selling social security numbers for unclaimed children doing all sorts of things.

re: This is why capitalism is unappealing to the majority

So, conservatives have a problem with all of the Great Society legislation except the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act? Is that what you're telling me

Conservatives don't have a problem with "all of" the legislation. Things like the Educational Television Facilities Act or the Health Professions Educational Assistance Act were fine. Things like expanding social program benefits (SS, welfare) to cover things they were never designed (nor funded) to cover and raising the minimum wage are parts of the legislation conservatives are against.

To put it in very general terms, conservatives are for things that help get people off the government tit by pushing them down the path of self-reliance. We don't so much mind the idea of government assistance as we do the ever-increasing government-dependency that these poorly managed programs have been encouraging.

No, you just want to kick people off welfare because you're mad about integration

quote:

Listen to the late Lee Atwater in a 1981 interview explaining the evolution of the G.O.P.'s Southern strategy:

''You start out in 1954 by saying, '****, ****, ****.' By 1968 you can't say '****' -- that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.

''And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me -- because obviously sitting around saying, 'We want to cut this,' is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than '****, ****.'''

Are you a teenager? You're confusing 'whites' 'republicans' and 'conservatives.' You keep mixing the terms.
Conservatives have NEVER been for socialism. I don't care what party or race it was. Conservatives warned against the Great Society and we have been proven to be right. It has been a disaster.

quote:

Wrong. The 60s caused a shift in southern Dems starting to vote GOP in very small numbers. Hell, how many southerners voted for Goldwater? Hmmmmm? Reagan won in 80 because Carter had driven us into the worst economy since the Depression.

A funny anecdote...I thought about Carter this morning. Carter gave us tremendous inflation. When I went to grocery store every other day I noticed a price increase on everything. But especially ground meat. Basic food for burgers and spaghetti and meatballs.

Well, this morning I went to Albertsons and on my list was ground beef for burgers since it's warm today and I wanted to grill outside. I picked up a 1 pound pack of ground beef and did a double take. The label said "$177.20" The price per pound was "$175.00. I told the butcher. "Hell, this is worse than the Carter days." He cracked up and removed the packs.

And people in the south who were democrats were all progressive but conservative on civil rights. Without the civil rights movement, so many people in the south who identify themselves as conservatives would not do so, from an economic policy standpoint

Wrong.

I'm right

Incorrect. It was all a perfect storm of economic conditions combined with resentment over affirmative action and busing

Bill Gates' children will probably go further than some poor kids on the southside of Monroe will. Not because his children are inherently better, but because they are more fortunate for having been born to him.

But they probably won't be as successful as their dad, Bill Gates, a self-made billionaire.

But yes, the playing field is not 100% level. Duly noted. Other than that flash of the blindingly obvious, do you have a point?
