Sure it is.

People will gladly trade liberty for perceived safety and security, even when it's false. It's just a type of "big brother" you prefer. While it slowly ads rules, laws and regulations....and grows.

The State has a compelling public safety reason to limit our freedom.
And that is good enough for me.
Who shall protect us from ourselves if not a vigilant State apparatus ?

Parents aren't with their kids 24/7. If a parent wants to buy something for their kid that is not sold to kids, then they can. Parents can still parent. But kids should not be able to buy certain things without their parents consent.

I think we all disagree on what is compelling. Firearms would be a good example.

I think Marijuana should be legal for adults just like energy drinks.

But I think marijuana should be banned from kids just like energy drinks.

I'm all for personal responsibility when it comes to ADULTS. But rules should be in place for kids.

That doesn't make me not a small government type. Adults should be able to do what they want.

I don't necessarily have a problem with that

I just wonder how far you're willing to take it. Should birthday cakes be legal for kids?

Yeah, I am sure if your kid can't get his Monster drink and wants a lift, there are no more dangerous alternatives floating around his/her school.

My definition of compelling is anything The State deems compelling at any specific point in herstory.

This applies to adults. And you believe in Big Brother, too. Why do you not want to admit it? If you believed in liberty completely, then you would agree that kids should be able to walk into a store and buy cocaine, heroine, porn, hookers, guns, alcohol, etc.

But I'm guessing you want those things banned from kids. Why? Don't you hate Big Brother?

Parents don't have to be with their kids 24/7. But if they do a good job, they don't have to be.

Good parents know this. Unfortunately society today tells you parents are unecessary.

we all have our boundaries. Lots of people here arguing against me don't think alcohol should be sold to kids. So you guys have your limit, too. How far do you guys want to take it?

Kids shouldn't be allowed anything that might be harmful whether it be bubble gum, corn chips, cartoons, the Star Spangled Banner, exposure to negative family members who hold improper views, etc.

The more State Intervention the better.

That just isn't true. In Utopia, it may be. But in reality even kids who come from the best parents do stupid stuff. That is why they are not expected to be perfect and we have different laws for minors.

Ah well, take away their energy drink and they will find the pill pusher. It's what kids do. Good luck.

There's a lot of truth here.

Most of the people on this board say they want freedom and personal responsibility, but there are probably only 2-3 posters I know of who will take this view all the way to it's conclusion.

And the further The State RESTRICTS the choices teens make, the better.
Except for sacrosanct sexual reproduction rights of course.

Generally speaking it IS true. Government banning things won't make it so kids doing stupid stuff won't do stupid stuff.

Good parents do a vastly superior job of making sure their kids don't do things harful to them. They're not perfect, but nothing is. Your argument is that not being perfect means the government should mandate it...and suck at it in the process.

Which is?

There are degrees, and everyone falls along some point on the continuum. No one is an absolutist in practice. Energy drinks are a fairly mild item to be banning, it's kind of easy to understand why people think it's silly.
