JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Hours after the United Nations voted overwhelmingly to grant de-facto statehood to Palestine, Israel responded on Friday by announcing it was authorizing 3,000 new settler homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
An official, who declined to be named, said the government had also decided to expedite planning work for thousands more homes in a geographically sensitive area close to Jerusalem that critics say would kill off Palestinian hopes of a viable state.

Isreal said if they went the route of the UN they would respond negatively...
we found out elections have consequences...
now we find out actions have consequences...
Knowing Israel's past propensity for "action" 3000 new settler homes is minor...

Well, the Palestinians did purposely subvert peace talks by doing this.
Even the Obama administration said that this move by the palestinians will damage the peace talks.
And by the way, since when has the UN ever had credibility in the last 10 years?

A divided Palestine (West Bank and Gaza separated by Israel) is not a viable state. Gaza should work on getting Egypt to annex them.

I find this to be interesting. By asking to be recognized as an observer, they are damaging peace talks? For all the grandstanding (falsely, in my opinion, but nonetheless) people do about Iran "not believing Israel has the right to exist", it certainly seems like Israel doesn't hold Palestine's existence in high esteem.

not justifying it either way, but when you hold all the cards the other side only gets the scraps. But, as bad as it is, things can always be worse....

I think you are overestimating the goodwill the world has for Israel. For better or worse, we no longer live in an age of empires and conquest. Borders have, for the most part, been locked into place. If Israel plays this incorrectly, I believe that they will find out what it feels like to be on the wrong side of those sanctions they so enjoy laying on Iran, et all.
