re: Gergen: Will Obama push us over the cliff?

I personally would be okay with going over the cliff.

This country needs some tough medicine to get itself back in line. The cuts to entitlements, I would be in favor of, even with an increase in taxes.

Part of negotiating is having competing plans. Right now we have 1 plan. Why can't Republicans put forth what they want cut and how they want to raise revenue.

I don't think anyone thinks this was a dictatorial election, but at the same time there were 2 views presented and Americans chose the vision of Obama which is to increase taxes on those making $250k+. Survey data back up their support for increasing these taxes.

No shit, it's not as if these cuts make any difference in regards to our deficit. On the other hand, I have no idea why the Republicans want to protect the wealthy anyway? Most of them voted for Obama.

ETA: If we want to call $500,000 rich I have no problem with that but 250k is not an accurate depiction of rich in my mind.

Well, it may not have been leaked for political gain.

But honestly, they did this for three months in the summer of 2011. It's pretty clear where the Republicans stand on the issues. There haven't been any major changes. They want significant spending cuts.

Who hires people? Wealthy or poor?

I do not want 1 cent in tax increases....for anybody. This government has proven it can not manage our tax dollars. Why the frick give them any more? Please, 1 person answer that question.

Yeah..as long as its the rich guy on the corner who they are envious of is paying more, that's okay.

But touch their taxes...noooooo...don't do that.

The Republicans are just working on a new narrative to support trying to block everything that the administration proposes and still save face.

It isn't working.

Why do you want more tax increases, to give to a government who has proven time and time again, that they can't manage the money we taxpayer give them?

You seem to forget the house republicans also ran and won on cutting spending.

This right here. This is the thing.

The electorate was clear on what it wanted; Higher taxes on affluent and above, but also substantive spending cuts to address the debt.

There is no reason that both can't happen so if the President and the House screw this up, I just give up.

I wouldn't be mad if it went over the cliff. I really think we need spending cuts that include cuts to entitlements AND the military.

Agreed but with little to no trust between parties negotiations must be behind closed doors with frank talk that won't get leaked.

I've said before it will come down one day to equal cuts across the board to make eveyone unhappy which is the way it should be.

Because Boehner has already offered up what is acceptable in terms of new revenue. Now it's Obama's turn to offer up acceptable spending cuts.

If they are just going to throw unrealistic plans at each other so the other side can bat them away and point fingers like friggin third graders, then they'll get nowhere.

Exactly. I love how Barry makes a big deal out of 1.6 trillion over 10 years. This gives 160 billion a year when the US currently runs approximately 1.2 trillion in defecits. Granted governent revenue from taxes will increase when we get out of the recession in the next 2-4 years, but I don't know that it will go up 1 trillion dollars.

But hey, there is always inflation.

I hope you're right. I could be wrong, but I believe the economic picture will get really ugly of the automatic cuts happen.

re: Gergen: Will Obama push us over the cliff?

quote:

Republicans need to put an offer on the table.

bs - the GOP put offers on the table last term and Obama/Reid did nothing except scoff at them.

Obama was elected. It is time for that bastard to stop campaigning and do some friggin' work. Let Obama put an offer on the table that has a chance of working. All he has done is ask for the moon again as he has done before - nothing serious about that a-hole.

I hope the GOP tells him to stuff it. He has crashed the economy and it is up to him to make some attempt to fix what he busted.

All the Obamaphiles should urge their dear leader to actually act on his promises. Unless they are all too stupid or too drugged up to notice. Or else they don't care if the economy crashes, which I suspect is the case.

Any GOPer who tries to 'compromise' with the DEMs on this should be voted out in the primaries.

Let the friggin' DEMs own what they broke. Compromising with them just allows them to blame the GOP for the failure - like they did with GWBush.

And Reagan.

The DEMs always promise reducing expenditures down the road in exchange for tax increases now. And the lying bastards have done nothing but make fun of the GOP falling for it AGAIN - like Lucy pulling the football from Charlie Brown. If we let the GOP end up with their foot in the air and the DEMs laughing at them again I think I will really go postal.

Let the DEMs fix their mess. NO COOPERATION (which to the DEMs means total capitulation) with the bastards.
