Students Learn Obama cuts access to Pell Grants by 33%

LINK

quote:

President Obama has cut your access to Pell Grants by 33%; he just forgot to mention it before Election Day.

quote:

The email states that the cut in eligibility was part of an education bill President Obama signed into law in 2011. "On December 23, 2011, President Obama signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2012 (Public Law 112-74). This new federal law states that the amount of Federal Pell Grant funds a student may receive over his or her LIFETIME will be reduced to the duration of a student's eligibility from 18 semesters (or its equivalent) to 12 semesters (or its equivalent). This new law applies to ALL Federal Pell Grant eligible students effective with the 2012-2013 award year beginning July 1, 2012. (DCL-GEN-12-01)"

Sorry you college lemming Obama voters

Wait, I was assured by this board that Obama doesn't cut spending ever and that the only reason anyone voted for him is because he gives them free stuff.

Glad to see he is making the cuts. Really it's a program that should be discontinued. It is ripe with abuse.

That specific cut was a GOP proposal during the debt ceiling fiasco.

OLD NEWS! They snuck that into a bill last at the end of 2011 and TOLD NOBODY! NOT one media source I saw did a story on it until it was long done.

I didn't find out until 2 weeks before this semester started, months after I was awarded. It dicked me over so hard. I've been paying out of state tuition for years, took my time off, worked 3 jobs, finally got my residency, and should have been 12 hours from getting the paper and on with life. My school did a degree review and decided they had to have more of my $, and f'd me on 24 hours I'd already gotten transfer credit on.

Of course I didn't get my little email until after I had already quit my jobs, shut down my side biz, and moved back to where the main campus is. I can't take loans anymore either, I maxed out b/c of the out of state costs. Being a non-traditional student scholarships are a hopeless dream, and I have a honors college level GPA.

The group it hurts the worst are adults who change careers or have to because of layoffs. You only get so many semesters in your entire life now, so going back to school and furthering education becomes further out of reach for working people that can't afford the college costs out of pocket.

Was a very shady way they did it, and a big reason I didn't vote. It sped up me starting a business, because I have to, and hopefully I can blow it up and not worry about being able to pay tuition again... likely because I just won't finish, I'm already in multiple markets and it won't slow down anytime soon.
