"Black" by Pearl Jam
quote:
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky But why Why Why can't it be Why can't it be mine
"I Could Have Lied" by RHCP
quote:
There must be something In the way I feel That she don't want me to feel The stare she bares cut me I don't care You see so what if I bleed I could never change Just what I feel My face will never show What is not real A mountain never seems to have The need to speak A look that shares so many seek The sweetest feeling I got from you The things I said to you were true I could never change Just what I feel My face will never show What is not real I could have lied I'm such a fool My eyes could never never never Keep their cool Showed her and I told her how She struck me but I'm fricked up now But now she's gone yes she's gone away A soulful song That would not stay You see she hides 'cause she is scared But I don't care I won't be spared
and the most poignant hip hop verse of all time by CeeLo in his Goodie Mob days from "I refuse limitation"
quote:
Well I woke up this mornin with the same frustration from situations like these Got a call about some work from one of them temporary agencies No high school diploma or any college degrees I can't enlist but they'll draft me if there's a war overseas Oh please Of course I can slice some OZs But see I'm one of those aspiring MCs And uh bills are due so at times I'm doubtful and everyone disagrees But I'd rather struggle on my feet than to live on my knees So my uniform tight workin all night at Mickey D's Got about 90 dollars and some change after the government get they fees These minimum wages ain't enough to feed my babies Purposely these limitations on black folks opportunities So I quit cuz I'm tired of being one of those overworked underpaid employees Stop carin at all went on and did a few small burglaries It seems like my face done turned into forgotten memories And I ain't gettin away with nothing because I know He always sees But see right now I need to see how I can get this here dope sold I done stuffed in my pocket as many rocks as it can hold They gon get high so I'ma get my money even though it's freezin cold Now how many times you done heard this story told? Believe it or not, it's some very intelligent junkies But dependencies is eatin away at they souls like disease Anyone can turn into somebody who covets and envies Unequal economics can easily make you some enemies And the crime rate never drops to the cops ride around in threes I knew he would have killed me if I did anything but freeze They found the rest of the dope in some nearby shrubberies In a dimlit room being questioned by these authorities And they gave me some time in correctional facilities And now my woman's gotta take on a man's responsibilities

One of my favorites! Pearl Jam Black line someone beat me to. "It says, 'son. Time is all the luck you need.'" 7 Mary Three. More Pearl Jam. The End. "People change as does everything. I wanted to grow old. I just want to grow old." Everybody knows somebody who died too soon. That line makes me think of EVERY one I have ever known . Now to lighten my mood. "The dance is always better when the stripper's crying." I have no idea who wrote/sang that.

Love Nick Cave's lyrics and honesty. Here's some of my other favorites The only girl I've ever loved Was born with roses in her eyes But then they buried her alive One evening 1945 With just her sister at her side And only weeks before the guns All came and rained on everyone Now she's a little boy in Spain Playing pianos filled with flames On empty rings around the sun All sing to say my dream has come But now we must pick up every piece Of the life we used to love Just to keep ourselves At least enough to carry on And now we ride the circus wheel With your dark brother wrapped in white Says it was good to be alive But now he rides a comet's flame And won't be coming back again The earth looks better from a star That's right above from where you are He didn't mean to make you cry With sparks that ring and bullets fly On empty rings around your heart The world just screams and falls apart But now we must pick up every piece Of the life we used to love Just to keep ourselves At least enough to carry on And here's where your mother sleeps And here is the room where your brothers were born Indentions in the sheets Where their bodies once moved but don't move anymore And it's so sad to see the world agree That they'd rather see their faces fill with flies All when I'd want to keep white roses in their eyes Read more: NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL - HOLLAND, 1945 LYRICS

From Nick Cave's 'The Curse Of Millhaven'
quote:
Since I was no bigger than a weavil They've been saying I was evil That if bad was a boot that I'd fit it That I'm a wicked young lady, but I've been trying hard lately O frick it, I'm a monster I admit it

Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have I still recall the taste of your tears Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore Scraping through my head 'till I don't want to sleep Anymore You make this all go away You make this all go away I'm down to just one thing And i'm starting to scare myself You make this all go away You make this all go way I just want something I just want something I can never have You always were the one to show me how Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now This thing is slowly taking me apart Gray would be the colour if I had a heart Come on, tell me You make this all go away You make this all go away I'm down to just one thing And I'm starting to scare myself You make this all go away You make this all go away I just want something I just want something I can never have In this place it seems like such a shame Though it all looks different now I know it's still the same Everywhere I look you're all I see Just a fading fricking reminder of who I used to be Come on, tell me! You make this all go away You make this all go away I'm down to just one thing And i'm starting to scare myself You make this all go away You make it all go way I just want something I just want something I can never have I just want something I can never have

These PJ Harvey lyrics still creep me out to this day-- I lost my heart Under the bridge To that little girl So much to me And now I'm old And now I holler She'll never know Just what I found That blue eyed girl (that blue eyed girl) She said "no more" (she said "no more") That blue eyed girl (that blue eyed girl) Became blue eyed whore ('came blue eyed whore) Down by the water (down by the water) I took her hand (I took her hand) Just like my daughter (just like my daughter) Won't see her again (see her again) Oh help me jesus Come through this storm I had to lose her To do her harm I heard her holler (I heard her holler) I heard her moan (I heard her moan) My lovely daughter (my lovely daughter) I took her home (I took her home) Little fish. big fish. Swimming in the water. Come back here, man. gimme my daughter. Little fish. big fish. Swimming in the water. Come back here, man. gimme my daughter. Little fish. big fish. Swimming in the water. Come back here, man. gimme my daughter ....

I've seen my people's dreams die I've seen what they can be denied And "weeds not a drug" - that's denial Groundhog Day life repeat each time I've seen Oxycontin take three lives I grew up with them, we used to chief dimes I've seen cocaine bring out the demons inside Cheatin' and lyin' Friendship cease, no peace in the mind Stealin' and takin' anything to fix the pieces inside Broken, hopeless, headed nowhere Only motivation for what the dealer's supplying That rush, that drug, that dope Those pills, that crumb, that roach Thinkin' I would never do that, not that drug And growing up nobody ever does Until your stuck, lookin' in the mirror like I can't believe what I've become Swore I was goin' to be someone And growing up everyone always does We sell our dreams and our potential To escape through that buzz macklamore otherside ive had a battle with drugs for quite some time. hes been through it too. lot of his songs deal with that

Tonight I feel like an old violin, Soon to be put away and never played again. Don't ask me why I feel like this, hell, I can't say. I only wish this feelin' would just go away. I guess it's 'cos the truth, Is the hardest thing I ever faced. 'Cos you can't change the truth, In the slightest way. I tried. paycheck, old violin

And I can't tell you How many ways that I've sat and viewed my life today But I can tell you I don't think that I can find an easy way So, if I see you Walkin' hand in hand in hand With the three armed man You know I'd understand But you should've been in my shoes yesterday. If any of you don't know about Shannon Hoon, that song sums up his struggles late in his short life. Incredible stuff from an incredible talent. Listen to that song if you haven't before,

Very possibly my favortie set of lyrics ever: Should I fall out of love, my fire in the light To chase a feather in the wind Within the glow that weaves a cloak of delight There moves a thread that has no end. For many hours and days that pass ever soon the tides have caused the flame to dim At last the arm is straight, the hand to the loom Is this to end or just begin? All of my love, all of my love, All of my love to you. The cup is raised, the toast is made yet again One voice is clear above the din Proud Arianne one word, my will to sustain For me, the cloth once more to spin Yours is the cloth, mine is the hand that sews time his is the force that lies within Ours is the fire, all the warmth we can find He is a feather in the wind All of my love - Led Zeppelin I dont think Bill Withers has any love yet: Use me: Talkin about you usin people It all depends on what you do It ain't too bad the way you're usin' me 'Cause I sure am usin' you to do the things you do' to do the things you do Lean on me: Sometimes in our lives We all have pain, we all have sorrow But if we are wise We know that there's always tomorrow Lean on me when you're not strong And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on For it won't be long 'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on Please, swallow your pride If I have things you need to borrow For no one can fill those of your needs That you won't let show You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand We all need somebody to lean on I just might have a problem that you'll understand We all need somebody to lean on

Gotta go with something different: Squint your eyes to see clearly. Blur reality to make it real Let focus go from your deceiving eyes to know what's been concealed We've all been blinded - Subjects to visual misinformation A systematic denial of the crystalline To see the fine grain, to read the hidden words The context of parallel truth - Devoid of fragmentation Our light-induced image of truth - Filtered blank of its substance As our eyes won't adhere to intuitive lines Everything examined, Separated, one thing at a time The harder we stare the more complete the disintegration. -Dissolution Eyes re-opened, Reasoning focalized, Receptors activated Perspectives distorted The ladder beyond our grasp The twin-headed serpent forever hidden Where's the true knowledge - Where engines of the sane & insanity merge The clarity. The unity Reality untouchable, transparent, invisible to our fixed, restricted fields of vision Existence taken for granted. -Absolute Possessed, owned, controlled By the common sense-infected rational gaze Onward forever we walk among the ignorant Never stray from the common lines Meshuggah: Rational Gaze

These lyics from Annie Lennox' "Why" always struck me: I may be mad I may be blind I may be viciously unkind But I can still read what you're thinking
