| 223/556 ammo question (Posted on 11/29/12 at 12:25 am)
LINK It says they may be seconds in the description. Is this a buy or a pass?

In my opinion, there is really only 1 or 2 questions you must ask yourself IF you have that much bank to toss around at some cheap ammo. 1. How many times will a jam piss you off and make you regret the purchase? If you have 2,000 rounds total, how many jams will make you regret. also how likely is it that you will hit the number of jams/duds "regret" amount? 2. Will this shite hurt the gun? (that's probably the total amateur in me with that question)

You are aware that steel core "penetrator" ammo is brass cased?

This. It won't the rifle like steel cased ammo will. They are two different things.

yes, but if it's "seconds" then it could decrease the integrity of the shell, right? not to mention, if they can get away with you buying it being fully aware that it's seconds or whatever, couldn't they easily sort of put it in a grey area with it being re-cased a few times? or was i misinterpreting the phrase seconds?

Doubt it. I'll look around. once fired brass is usually ok. But I have heard of some bad lots. Wish there were some reviews on that stuff.

Federal 223 Remington-5.56 NATO, Steel Core Rifle Ammunition rounds are production overruns or in some cases seconds, which may have been declared as such due to a small sampling not passing military specifications in one way or another. It is loaded to NATO specs and is NOT intended for use in commercial or bolt-action rifles chambered in 223 Remington, but is perfect for your AR15 in 5.56 cal. Each round is brass-cased, boxer-primed, non-corrosive, and reloadable. It is both economical and precision manufactured in the United States.
This leads me to believe all green tip steel core is this way.

No I'm wrong.
Definitely not a reload

What they mean by the term "seconds" is that the batch did not meet military specifications. The mil specs are really tight though, so they may have been rejected for something as small as inconsistent velocities, or a slightly different "feel." For us civilian shooters it doesn't really matter.

Do you mean being reloaded a few times? I handload .223 and you can easily reload a case 5-10 times depending on if the brass holds up. I'll continue to load cases until I see a crack, and I'll pitch it.

cool. yeah, that was the number i was looking for. 5-10. well, as a noob i would have never bought something where the line looked blurred when they said "seconds" but now i know what the terminology means. i literally just bought my first rifle. (i've shot plenty in the past, but never owned) so i'm learning tons every time i get on a computer it seems.

I just bought 200 rounds of steel cased at .30 cents. I'm not sure if my gun will have problems with it but for that price I went ahead and got them. If I remember correctly from posts around here, you can take 2 of the same model gun and one may have problems with steel. Is that true?

Yessir. Since brass is so readily available every time I visit the range, I will never have to buy 5.56 or .223 brass ever. I can reload for 21 cents a round.
