| Things that used to be legal that seem almost unthinkable now (Posted on 11/28/12 at 10:23 pm)
I've heard people say that in the future one day people will look at issues like gay marriage in the past and wonder how it was ever illegal in the first place. Maybe, maybe not. But for fun, let's try to list some things that are illegal now, but used to be legal that would seem almost unbelievable to people now. Slavery is too obvious so no need to even mention I'll go first: the amount of places where you could legally smoke. Being allowed to smoke on an airplane in particular seems so far fetched that I could see how a teenager might think you are lying if you told them it used to be legal.

Only drug stores and supermarkets could be open on Sunday. No liquor or beer sales on Sundays or election days.

Putting your kids in the back of the pickup and head out on a road trip. Now they have to be fastened in like dale Earnhardt ...ok bad example.

in Louisiana, it used to be legal to trespass onto private land and hunt on it without the owner's permission as long as that land didn't have POSTED signs on it. People still do this at my house, btw.

I used to be able to drag dirt from one part of my land onto another part of my land to create a trail that's dry enough to drive my tractor on.

No That's actually a good example Is it illegal for say a teenager to ride in the back of a pickup? What about Mexicans?

I used to be able to ride a bike on LSU's campus only having to fear being run over by motorists and trying to avoid hitting people.

I don't have first hand experience of either, but your smoking example is good. However, to me it's the whole notion of an entire business office smoking during working hours indoors that seems harder to believe, but I've heard many stories of hoe there would be a cloud of smoke hanging in an office during working hours. Second I guess, would be drugs. Though illegal, pot and cocaine both experienced periods of prolific use with seemingly little effort to disuade by police.

Legal if there are loose items in the bed of the truck that are not fastened, then the Mexican may sit on the items to hold them down. Passed in 07 I believe.

I believe this varies state by state.

Lots of good stories from south Florida sales reps I've worked with about how business was conducted in the 80s. Blow was like coffee and donuts.

I used to be able to meet my loved ones at the terminal of an airport. I use to be able to board a plane without someone looking at a naked picture of me, patting me down, and making me take my shoes off. I used to be able to purchase insurance across state lines.
