Don't call his show and tell him your sad story. You wouldn't like his answer at all. Better yet, do call his show. Sounds like you could have benefited from some Ramsey advice several years ago. Where were you parents when you were making all of these life changing decisions?
I don't really have a sad story to tell yet. If I can get a job that pays the bills, I'm going to pay my loans and continue my life as a productive member of society, but that doesn't mean I think college was a worthwhile investment that I wasn't suckered into due to my own ignorance. We can play the blame game all day long, but it's clear to me that there's negligence on the part of people who should know better. Elderly couples who fall victim to email phishing attempts could have avoided having their bank accounts wiped out even if they were even remotely technology literate, but no one tells them to buck up when they've lost their life savings. Instead, we view the scammers as the scumbags and place blame on them. Is this only because they're breaking the law or because they're miserable human beings? Is it some of both? ---- ---- Hence, if Obama pays off my student loans, I won't complain at all because even if I land a great job, it will be only because I had a spiffy piece of paper and not because I actually learned anything useful. Our entire educational system is in need of major reform at all levels, and until then, college is an absolute joke. I don't like I got what was promised to me, so I won't feel bad at all if the government retracts my debt. I think too many of you joined college to have a good time attending frat parties and football games then having mommy and daddy use their professional network to land you a sweet job to realize why college should truly exist -- to get an education rather than a credential.

I admit I have defaulted on 2 loans, but my monthly payments combined is $1800 a month. I only make about $45k a year combined on my 2 jobs, plus helpng my buddy with Christmas lights so making money on the side with that too. Even at $45k a year you can not spend $1800 a month on student loans, its impossible. I took the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace course, and there I learned to pay the "four walls" first, your housing/food/clothing/gas, and then whatever you have leftover to put toward your debt. I don't have enough leftover after my necessities to pay for the $550 and $700 a month payments, so I had to default. But I am not going hungry or going homeless to pay a student loan. That goes against Dave Ramsey's "You pay yourself first" principle. However, I am not on my knees looking for the government to bail me out. I signed the dotted line, picked a shitty major, and I am responsible and no one else. And I have intention to pay it back. Not having intention to pay it back is stealing. I am just trying to work my way up so I can pay them all. I am still paying the loans I can afford. I am about to go back to graduate school as a grad assistant, so I can put my loans on deferment and not incur any more education costs.

I'm one more semester until graduation, but probably the average amount? 25k-ish? Again, I don't find myself in quite the same mess as people with $100,000 in debt, but I feel for them. You're probably right about one thing. There's not much of an excuse for the people that can amass 70-100k in debt, but the fact that so many people end up owing that kind of debt tells me something is wrong somewhere. What kind of country will we be living in when this debt-ridden generation inherits the country while retired baby boomers and retiring gen Xers suck away the last bit of government entitlement programs?
I am $100k in the hole, even though I had a partial scholarship. It sucks. But I made the decision and its my responsibility, not taxpayers or Obama, to get myself out of it. I knew before graduating, that I picked a shite major. Even with the internships I did and network connections I picked up, I can't find anything that pays more than $25k in the field. And I did some pretty impressive internships and made good grades. The job market for my field sucks and it may never recover. No one in my major that I graduated with(graduated May 2011) has found a full time job in our field. Other people have full time jobs, but not in the field.

What a great outlook to have....I'm sure you'll make your employer very happy since you learned nothing and are such a go-getter.

Yup Always wanted to be a sportsbroadcaster, but every place I have applied told me I do not have the voice, which is true. My voice is relatively high pitched and not very smooth. I interned at ESPN and Fox SPORTS too But even if I could get a minor league baseball position as a broadcaster, I am making about $20k a year. Other positions in the field such as production or camera work are done on a freelance basis, not a full time basis, unless you are producing/directing for a major sports team or on an A-team crew for ESPN. But to land those jobs you have to start as a freelancer making about $125 a job. Even if you worked 5 games a week(unlikely) its only about $25k a year. It's possible to pull off if you have no student debt I have seen the writing on the wall and am going to grad school to get a masters.

Good call. My gf and her sister were both communication majors. Gf interned with ESPN, FSU's sports marketing program, AND had 15-20 video segments air on sunsports (big sports network down here). Her sister finally got a newspaper job after 2-3 years of looking. My gf could have had a full time job, but like you said, she would have made absolutely nothing. Good luck on grad school

It's a different field these days. I remember about 7 years ago when I was still in high school my hometown paper, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, seemed to have about 20 writers for the sports page alone. Had 2 high school writers, 3 college writers, 2 for each professional team, NASCAR writer, horse racing writer, general columnists, etc. Used to be jobs plenty in the field. Now my same hometown newspaper only has about 7 writers for the sports page on staff. One for the Rangers, 2 for the Cowboys, 2 various columnists, and 2 editorialists. No more writers for the Mavericks or Stars, no more high school writers, no more NASCAR or golf or horse racing writers. Lots of downsizing. Newspaper is a dying field, but its the same in radio and TV too. Heck when I interned at ESPN Radio everyone in the studio except the executive producers and talk show hosts were part-time. Even the show producers, board ops and Sports Center update anchors were part time. I got offered by ESPN Radio out of that internship, but it was a part time 20 hour a week job that I turned down because of an internship I got in California that ended up being a big dead end.

Definitely. Even full time bloggers/writers are barely making 20-30k/year. Not to mention that you also have to compete with older, laid off workers that have 20+ years of experience on you.

Actually, I had a real job and worked on weekends as well to pay it off faster so I could get on with my life. Nice assumption a-hole.

At ESPN I worked with Matt Mosely, who does a talk show now but used to be the NFC East Blogger for ESPN. He made more since he had been with ESPN for a while, but he said the bloggers at ESPN make about 30k a year and work from home. He also said he hated it and would not wish having that job on his worst enemy.

You are one depressing college kid. Let me get this straight. You actually have a good GPA with a high chance of getting a job upon graduation but you don't want to pay your loan back because you didn't LIKE your education? So you purchased a service and want it free because it wasn't up to your standards? Hey, I bought my car four years ago and I don't like it anymore. I want my money back. WTF is this world coming to.

I didn't get that to necessarily be what he was suggesting at all. Perception rarely equals reality.
