re: Delinquent student loans surge in Q3

quote:

So you are telling me it is everyone else that needs to pay because you aren't smart enough to realize the possible ramifications of your actions. Simply put you get a education and potential realized earnings increased over a lifetime for nothing? GFY

There's ramifications both ways as I mentioned.

It's easy to be a tough guy on the internet. Let me guess, when you were 16, you dropped out of school and had two kids. When you turned 18 you got your GED and enrolled in college. You finished college in 4 years while working full time and taking care of two kids while also working 3 internships and got a job straight out of college paying you 75k a year right?

*golf clap*

Be realistic, do you believe that the average 18 year-old is mature enough to make an educated decision about how he will spend the rest of his life? In a perfect world, you would be correct; however, we're not living in a perfect world are we? Regardless of what you think, colleges continue posting record enrollment figures as post-graduate unemployment climbs higher and higher.

I can see your side of the argument, but trust me, I don't believe college graduates are the ones that want to leech off the government. They're in college because they've been brainwashed since birth that a degree will give them a good job. The problem is the whole idea is a giant fallacy. In about 25-30 years we really will be living in a welfare state if this continues. Is that what you want?

But you are fapping to the potential of your theft of money for that education! Sweet what a fricking deal junior. Again GFY

Dave Ramsey calls it a "stupid tax". Hate you are struggling and all but you did in fact receive something in exchange for someone loaning you money.

I'm not yet struggling. I've maintained a high GPA, so it's clear to my potential employer that I haven't sleepwalked through school, but I can see the writing on the wall.

I do believe that it's easy for people to adopt the hard-nosed approach that you and the other guy a few posts above have adopted, but at the same time, show a little sympathy.

I don't know what you mean by the Dave Ramsey "stupid tax," but I have a feeling I'm not going to like it. Is he relating to college specifically?

I certainly haven't borrowed from private distributors with exorbitant interest rates like many have, but even obtaining loans through traditional means can still be somewhat pricey. Bottom line, if I wanted a college education which is seen as the sole source of success in this country, I had to take out said "stupid tax."

In the end, it's really like this:

If I promised you a shiny, brand new car if you just paid me $5,000 and everything you had previously known about said new car was that it was the best product on the market, you're going to take that deal, because the initial cost doesn't compare to the tremendous longterm benefit of owning such a car.

You get the car, and it's a flaming heap of junk with chipped paint, non-functioning equipment, and ripped seats. You're telling me you won't feel cheated and attempt to get your money back?

I somehow seriously doubt that.

Also, on a somewhat unrelated note:

I don't know how old you are, but how do you feel about social security and medicare?

As a 23-year old, I doubt those benefits will be around when I'm of the age where I can benefit from them, but what are you willing to sacrifice to keep them around for yourself?

You do realize if student loans are forgiven, that eventually when you do find a job you will be helping pay for others to receive the same benefit you are hoping for? More than likely costing you more in the long run...

I don't know. Time/present value of money is a pretty big deal.

I'm one more semester until graduation, but probably the average amount?

25k-ish?

Again, I don't find myself in quite the same mess as people with $100,000 in debt, but I feel for them.

You're probably right about one thing. There's not much of an excuse for the people that can amass 70-100k in debt, but the fact that so many people end up owing that kind of debt tells me something is wrong somewhere.

What kind of country will we be living in when this debt-ridden generation inherits the country while retired baby boomers and retiring gen Xers suck away the last bit of government entitlement programs?

I wish this was my loan burden.

Jesus, this can't even compare to paying for a house, were you ever considering buying a house?

Basically, what I'm saying is my loan penis is way bigger than yours. By multitudes. You really shouldn't be complaining unless you think you will be unemployed for another 5 years and paying nothing on those.

Looking at our current debt issues, all i can think of is "You ain't seen nothing yet". The mentality of raising taxes now on a small group of people and reducing spending over a 10 year is a perfect example of our problems we currently face. Lets at least make it look like we're doing something....

Unless you bought that house while unemployed, you can't really make that comparison.

Don't call his show and tell him your sad story. You wouldn't like his answer at all. Better yet, do call his show. Sounds like you could have benefited from some Ramsey advice several years ago. Where were you parents when you were making all of these life changing decisions?

Sort of....

I wish I was a minority, I wouldn't have this problem.

Its tough sledding, but luckily I got work 6 months after graduation, and passed the bar.

Also, my hopefully future wife is a law school pro and already has a really good gig for after school already. I call her my sugar momma all the time.
