| Golfers, about the possible ban of "anchoring" putters (Posted on 11/28/12 at 6:05 pm)
I think it's dumb for people to say, "Golf should have the same rules for everyone, from pros to the amateurs. It's part of what makes the game great." I play a good bit of golf and I occasionally play in local tournaments ( BREC, local country clubs) and I rarely play the game under the same rules as the pros. I bump it in the fairways, I might occasionally move my ball off of a root (I can't afford to break my clubs), little stuff like that. Even some of the tournaments I play in allow the ball to be bumped in the fairway. Something else I don't do like the pros, I don't play 495 yard par 4s. I would probably quit golf if I had to play 7,500 yard courses lie the pros. My point is, allowing the amateurs to keep anchoring the putter will not ruin the game of golf.

Sounds like evidence to me that we don't need a golf board

It could be cyclical, like the Coaches Changes Board. April-August

Allowing pros to use it won't either. It's a complete overreaction. For 30 years, it was fine.

I agree, let whoever anchor the club, but not the pros. Of course nobody plays like the pros (for the most part) when it comes following the rules. However, I'm glad they made the change bc bringing the club back to square is not easy to do while putting, and if it's anchored, the pendulum allows the club face to do that. And like Tiger said, it's an art, and I think it's better for the game overall on the PGA level with this change

Totally agree. I play for fun, I play the way I want too. Now if I'm playing scramble or robin, totally different story. Except for the 14 rule...which I carry 17

Here are the top 25 putters on tour last year. 1 guy uses a method that will banned in 2016. If the USGA can explain how this is the issue facing the game, I'll be for it. There are far more pressing issues than bellygate 1 1 Brandt Snedeker 81 .860 55.874 65 2 2 Jonas Blixt 72 .806 51.593 64 3 3 Luke Donald 63 .797 38.276 48 4 4 Brian Gay 91 .671 52.364 78 5 5 Bryce Molder 83 .647 45.940 71 6 6 Martin Flores 95 .643 52.756 82 7 7 Derek Lamely 64 .630 35.280 56 T8 T8 Aaron Baddeley 73 .599 32.922 55 T8 T8 Zach Johnson 95 .599 44.356 74 10 10 Phil Mickelson 79 .591 35.440 60 11 11 Bo Van Pelt 84 .577 37.506 65 12 12 Y.E. I think anchoring is cheating. There are rules in pace against things like strattling the ball, so I agree with the rule to ban anchoring...for the pros.

I think I heard that something like 27 or so golfers participated in this past year's US Open with a long putter.

Dang, I understand doing that when you play for fun but that shouldn't ever happen in tournament play. I wouldn't even do that if I was just playing my buddies for money.

I wouldn't move a ball off of a root in a tournament, but I do ant other tie. I don't move it to give me a shot, I'm just not going to break a club over it. Also, I have played in a few tournaments that allowed scorecard relief up to the green.

Carl Pettersson is the only one in that list that anchors. Kuchar's method is still legal.

Broke my wrist in an event a couple years ago.

this thread is reminding me of my round of golf today. I had the shanks like a mother fricker Giant balloon slices and I'm not usually much of a slicer, this was ridiculous and it was every club. I almost broke my 6 iron in half on 18 when I hit what I thought was a perfect shot to the green, about half way there it just shoots right; I swear it was like a 90 degree angle turn. I have no idea wtf I was doing either
