| "Social Security is in great shape" (Posted on 11/28/12 at 12:30 pm)
Good news, my friends! There is no need to 'fix' Soc Sec. It's on solid financial ground. UAW explained it to me this morning. Me: UAW, I set up a retirement plan for my wife 15 years ago because I explained to her that SS might be bankrupt by the time she hits 65. UAW: Zach, that's crazy. SS is in great shape. The only reason people were worried was because for years the Republicans have been raiding the trust fund to pay for their programs. Now that Obama has been re-elected and the Dems control the Senate they won't let the GOP raid the fund anymore. And since there are more workers than retirees Soc Sec will be on solid ground forever. Me: Why did the GOP raid the trust fund? UAW: Because they wanted SS to go bankrupt. They have always hated SS because it's the most successful program in US history and it was created by the Dems. A lot of people vote Dem today out of appreciation for them creating SS. Me: So, there is no need for SS reform at all? UAW: No. There is no need to raise the retirement age and no need to increase the payroll tax on current workers. Now, I'm all for means testing. If you're 65 and you own your house and have 50K in the bank, you don't need no SS. It should go to the people that need it. Me: Thanks for explaining it to me. I feel much better now.

No. He absolutely believes everything he's saying. He's not trying to be deceitful. He also said today that Bobby Jindal is trying to raid the retirement funds of the state police and teachers to pay for his pet programs. He says Jindal is the worst governor we ever had. This guy is 71. He retired at 65 from GM. He painted cars. His salary during his last year was 75K. He lives in a small old brick house in a declining neighborhood and only gets broadcast TV because cable is too expensive. He doesn't read papers or watch network news. His only source of information is the UAW newsletter he gets in the mail plus his conversations with fellow union workers.

Someone explain this to me. Is this the rest of the federal government essentially borrowing from the SS trust fund? If so, then they are supposed to get interest on that money. Unless we decide not to pay it back (essentially default on US treasuries) I don't see how this is a raid. And I certainly don't see how this is a Republican deal. If the fund wasn't invested in treasuries, what other investments would it be in? Corporate bonds? The stock market? There was an opinion piece in the Advocate today that was essentially saying the same thing and it struck me as odd then as well. At least the dems have gotten together on their talking points.

Sweet! I'll stop saving for my retirement now that I know I can depend on good old Uncle Sam to take care me in my old age or if I become disabled. Forward!

This is my favorite point he tries to make. I would ask him, if I could stop paying into SS when I own my house and have 50K in the bank would he be for it?

After reading the latter post I retract my desire for shooting him. Such an endeavor might improve his intellect by a couple of points.

SS might actually last longer with Obamacare going into full force. People will not be living as long with the rationing and waiting that is about to commence.

That's actually a very good point. That might be offset, however by the mayor of NYC eliminating 16 oz sugar drinks in his city.

Well, hell. I just read this article in USA Today. Dick Durbin says SS is fine. LINK He and UAW must be getting the same newsletters.
