That's the same thing I was thinking.
I'm not married, but my brother paid for his groomsmen tux rentals and got them a small gift. I think it was pocket knives.
My parents paid for my sister's bridesmaids' dresses. I firmly believe that these things should be considered as part of the cost of a wedding. Your friends shouldn't have to foot the bill for the privledge of standing in your wedding imo.
I know my belief is not firmly held by many though

i just know that last wedding i stood in last year:
$250 in travel (driving from Dallas to NOLA and back)
$350 in hotel (3 days. rehersal dinner on Thursday and wedding on saturday)
$150 in bachelor party activities
$100 in my share of groomsman gift (5 groomsmen)
$75 for one way party bus from Lafayette to NOLA (that i didnt even get to ride on because I did not have anyone to bring me back to lafayette to get my truck)
$150 for food, drink, etc over the 4 days of the trip

Dude. They are getting 2 meals paid for the day before and day of (welcome party, rehersal dinner, lunch day of and reception). An amazing party with a band, unlimited food and unlimited booze.

You could always get canned gifts for the people that aren't your actual close friends. Just give them their gifts in private. If you don't know what to give your closest friends, then you are a shitty friend.

Get them things they will USE. No cigar cutters or flasks if they don't smoke cigars or drink.
I got of mine hunting boots, another a looflighter and rolling cooler with his favorite beer iced down, another soft cooler with his favorite beer and fifa 13, my brother got his windows tinted and a couple books he wanted, and the last one a looftlighter.
Spent between $90 to $200 on each.
Also, it was a beach wedding so they didn't wear a tux, already owned what they needed to wear. My wife got her MOH a pair of ray bans.

8 groomsmen is a fair number. you have to remember, a lot of the people on here dont have many friends. a large part of their friendbase actually comes from meeting on this board.
paying for the tux would be lame as frick. You're then just basically making it about money. And the gift shouldn't be about the money.
And im not sure who spends over 1k to go to a wedding? Rouge? WTF? unless you are spending multiple nights out of town. If you are that poor then dont go bro

People have started getting gifts they think we need and either already have or don't want.

Well our best man had to pay for travel as well(well everyone did). He paid for his suit as well($100). However we told him he did NOT have to buy us a gift, that being in our wedding and being there was gift enough for us. We also promised him we would come out and visit him in Utah this summer(he has been asking B to come out and visit for awhile).
But yeah I realize it costs someone a lot to be in a wedding. My sister actually didn't pay for one thing to be in mine, however since it was just her it wasn't a big deal to pay for everything(dress,shoes,hair,makeup,jewelry, etc).
OP...no need to be a pretentious dick btw.

ive gotten some shitty gifts from the weddings i stand in, and the guys are still some of my best friends.
i like the duffle bag idea. Very practical
