I'm waiting for the last name. That might be the guy who built my mauser. If it is, you're in good hands.

Still thinking its going to be a M94 though.
You could be right.... I'd assumed M98, but the ad actually doesn't specify what model Mauser.... Still very interested as to the details and any references. Will be watching this thread for follow up info.

The 98 is a stronger action and a little more sought after because it can be used for magnum stuff. They are all really great though.

Good. Let us know. May be my Christmas present if they're half decent. He must've bought a couple cases of them when they were <$100 and must make his own stocks for that price.

Quite a few differences. The easiest to see is that the Model 98 has a larger bolt shroud that serves to deflect gas away from the shooter in the even of a ruptured case. Other differences are that the Model 94 is a cock on closing action whereas the Model 98 is a cock on opening action. The Model 94 has two locking lugs and the Model 98 has three. The 98 has the two on the front of the bolt and one on the rear. The 94 is small ring action and the 98 is a large ring action. All that means is that the front receiver ring of the 98 is larger and theoretically, at least, that makes it a stronger action. There are some other minor differences, but those are the main ones and the ones that clearly differentiate a Model 94/96 from a 98.

Downshift, Between the cocking bolt and the rear bolt, there is a horizontal lever that's pointing to the left. Is that horizontal lever the safety? If so, how is it manipulated from safe to fire without hitting the ocular bell of the scope? Did your Mauser come w/ the cocking bolt already turned down?

Not him, obviously, but yeah, that is the safety. On that rifle, the scope looks high enough for it to work. However, there are plenty of low scope safeties that can be put on pretty easily.

Yes that is the original safety. I can't use it because of the scope. If you look closely, there is a 700 style safety on the side of the bolt which is part of the aftermarket timney tigger. And the bolt was bent by the smith who built the gun.

My other M96 has a low-scope safety like you are describing. I like it better than the 700 style one on this gun since it locks the bolt down when the safety is on.
