Need help finding optics for a 1938 Mosin Nagant.

The gun was used by Russian soldiers in WWII and I would prefer to not alter a piece of history for the sake of using it as a hunting and target rifle. My preference is to find a scope that is functional, but also accurate historically. A replica would be fine, I just need to know where in BR or New Orleans to look. Ordering online is also an option. Price range is open so all suggestions are acceptable. Modern optics are will be considered, but I will look at replicas first.

As many of you know the Mosin has a vertical bolt which interferes with most optics. I will not entertain the idea of a bent bolt.

Thanks for any help ladies and gentlemen.

Local gun shop out by me (katy, tx)just recevieved a shipment of the real deal MN sniper rifles they want 479.00 for them.

Maybe you can call them and buy one over the phone and have it shipped if you can't find any local.

If so let me know and I will post there info.

Those rifles were issued with scopes during WWII for snipers and certain other soldiers. You may be able to find period mounting hardware on midwayusa.com

Larry preciates it

Thanks for the info TexasTiger. Unfortunately the gun will be given to me as a groomsman gift (already purchased and cleaned, saw it the other day). If the company in Texas would be willing to send me a scope and mount with no rifle then I would be open to calling them, but buying a whole rifle isn't really an option.

Downshift, I'm looking into midway.

Anyone else, keep suggestions coming please.

Edit: Besides optics, are there any other differences in the sniper version? Barrel, trigger, stock, or otherwise?

I doubt it, but I'm not well versed on the mosin nagant at all.

You should definitely call them. If they have non-matching numbers rifles they should be willing to seperate parts for a certain dollar amount.

I spend WAY too much time on there. They do real good business. Customer service is great.

Another option for the Mosins is to remove the rear sight and mount a scout scope with long eye relief if you want better optics

I've read about removing the rear sight. That's definitely an option. I have a friend trying to convince me to go bent bolt.

I'm on the fence about modern optics vs period optics. Lots of people hold the opinion that there are millions upon millions of Nagants, and you should put whatever optic you want on it. I know a nice new hunting revolver optic would be more effective on the Nagant, but my range will probably be 100-400 yards. That hardly requires modern technology. Thoughts?

I think if you are actually gonna try to hunt with that long arse rifle then a modern optic would be the way to go. The technology is heand and shoulders above any period correct optic that you might find. If you were to tap the receiver to accept scope mounts you'd have to get the bent bolt modification. A scout scope would eliminate the need to modifiy the handle.

Could you find an example of a long eye relief optic? I have no experience with these old rifles.

Might be away from a minute. Checking any of the sporting good websites for "long eye relief" scopes would yield results though.

I don't see how this attaches to a Mosin. I'm looking at 3 Mosins right now and they all have wood on the side.

By the way, I had it in mind to start this exact same thread because I'm in the EXACT same situation as CSorre1.

It would probably have to be tapped.

So, is it an M38 or just a regular Moison made in 1938? If it is an M38, there is no historically accurate scope as that the M38 was a carbine and was never scoped. The M38 is my favorite Moison. It basically a short carbine like the M44, but without a bayonet. It is a really short and handy little package.

After some amount of research, a bent bolt makes things WAY easier. Still searching.

Why not? The Russians entertained the idea.

These guns are flooded on the market. It's not like you are altering a rare "piece of history". Just because they are old doesn't mean they are worth anything.

If you are worried about preserving any historical significance of a Mosin Nagant, buy another one and keep one in origina condition. It only costs another $99.
