| Customer Mauser 98 info -- Update page 3 (Posted on 11/28/12 at 10:56 am)
I know there's been tons of 'rifle help' questions on the board lately, but this is one i know nothing about and need expert opinion. I'm in the market for a new hunting rifle in the ~$400-500 range. Been looking at Marlin XL7, Ruger American, Rem 700, etc. I'd really like a walnut stock in a 270wsm, but i'll settle for a 7mm or 270. My brother told me the other day of a local gunsmith that will build a Modern custom rifle with a Mauser 98 action, custom barrel, custom stock, in any caliber i wish for less than $400. Guaranteed sub-MOA. Does anyone know about these custom builds? and if this price range is too good to be true? I dont have his name/number yet, so this is all the info i have. Trying to see whether or not i should get my hopes up.

Yes, what they do is remove the barral from the action of a older mauser. It could be from 1919. One can buy those rifes for under $100. I shot a couple rebuids. Nice, but I don't think you will find one under $700 if it is any good. Rem 700 is a good rife. I would go that way. Way cheaper in the long run.

No way it can be done for 400.

$400 is not realistic for a top end 98 rebuild. You can have a model 98 "sporterized" for that much though, which will land you with a very good and unique rifle chambered in 8mm Mauser.

or 7mm Mauser. Which I killed my biggest buck to date with.

I didn't realize the 98 was made in 7mm mauser. That would be a little better since 8mm ammo is less common and has a smaller selection. Both are very cool calibers.

I'm not really looking for a shelve gun, i need something that shoots well and looks fairly modern. Is the 7mm Mauser a 7x57?

Yea I believe so. Great caliber. All of the Mauser calibers are fantastic deer calibers.

Personally, I'd go buy the 700.

For that price its gotta be a sporterized version not a custom rebuild unless the guy works for peanuts. It's still a good rifle. Hell, do it with a Mosin and it'll even be cheaper. The Monte Carlo stocks and bent bolt handle look really good imo.

Problem is getting a good bullet and finding them at the ready which is very hard. Not many places carry them.

Yea but because of the internets, I don't worry about that anymore for my Mauser. Back in the day Jim's always had a good supply.

He can't get a custom barrel and stock for that price. He would be losing money and then throwing in his time and the action for free.

Yea. He could definitely get a surplus rifle made into a nice hunting rifle for about 200 bucks though. Won't be the prettiest thing ever but it'll shoot.

ST, I saw a similar ad in a local "Penny Saver" type publication. I had the same questions as everyone else here. Don't see how a gunsmith could make ANY money on the deal, espcially since the ad I saw quoted a price as low as $300 EACH. Here's the ad: "Cusotm built mauser rifles for sale, all calibers. If I don't have what you want in less than 2 weeks I can build it. Calibers 25.06, 30-06, 257 Roberts, 22.250, 300 Winchester short mag. Mausers-all for $300 each, any caliber, individual $350.(318) 461-5529, (318) 933-8222" Who wants to be the first one here to call?!

Well i called this number on the add (dont know if its the same as my brother told me though). Older gentlemen in Gloster, with a machine shop behind his house. Still sounds too good to be true lol. -Any caliber from a 22 swift to a 416 rigby -prefab SS barrel (i didnt write down the manufacter). -laminated walnut stock (usually does thumbhole, but can do a straight stock. -action and bolt all high polished to like new condition. -Nothing over $400. He has about 5 already built. I'm going to go look at them this afternoon hopefully. Will report back.

He's gonna be getting more business than he wants if this pans out. Still thinking its going to be a M94 though.
