| Les Miserables and Zero Dark Thirty have both entered the Oscar race (Posted on 11/26/12 at 8:09 am)
Both films were screened for critics and Oscar voters this past week and both films received enthusiastic standing ovations. Anne Hathaway is probably your Best Supporting Actress winner this year and Hugh Jackman came out of the screening as a strong contender for Best Actor. Both Les Miserables and Zero Dark Thirty are now considered STRONG contenders in the Best Picture race with Zero Dark Thirty's Jessica Chastain also entering the mix for Best Actress. I know a lot of you don't really care about the Oscar race, but as a fan of this kind of stuff, I have to say that this is going to be the strongest crop of nominees in years if these reviews are any indication.

I never would have thought that Zero Dark Thirty would have gotten this good of reviews.

If the Hurt Locker can do it... They both look good.

This has been a great year for movies thus far and it seems like we have still a few major contenders waiting to be released. Regarding Zero Dark Thirty, I read that Chastain has become the frontrunner for Best Actress. Sucks I'll likely have to wait until the wide release on January 11 (if I recall correctly) to see it.

Yeah...I don't know if it's just fan hype but it sounds like the award is coming down to her and Jennifer Lawrence.

Indeed. Which reminds that Silver Linings Playbook is another big one I'll have to catch when it comes out here.

You know it's a down year when Zero Dark Thirty is Oscar worthy

If Samantha Barks doesn't win Best Supporting Actress the Oscars should just stop.

You haven't even seen the film yet. I would probably agree with you if films like The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers were still in the discussion but, seeing as they are not, I fully believe this will be the best line up Oscar has put together since 2007-2008 when No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood were your Oscar frontrunners.

Les Miz is a lock for Best Picture. Might as well hand the award to that film right now. Other than that, it's a great race for nearly all of the other categories. Best year in film in quite a while.

By the time Les Miz is released, Lincoln will have been in theater's well over a month. Les Miz will steal all of the thunder and get an insane amount of hype through December/January....right up to the Oscar voting.

Yeah the hype make a lot of difference in a race like this. That's why a great movie like Argo will be forgotten by the time voting begins because it won't be fresh in everyone's mind anymore.

Am I crazy for not being excited about Les Miserables at all? I mean, I saw the previews and thought it looked like an upscale, literary version of Moulin Rouge.

Watch this, then reevaluate ETA: I'm just pissed that Alfie Boe didn't get the part over Jackman. And that Amanda Seyfried is anywhere near this.

Hugh Jackman is probably going to get an Oscar nomination for Les Miserables if the reviews are any indication. And I agree with the above statements. Films like Argo and The Master will be forgotten come Oscar time because they were released too early. Both films will get well-deserved nominations but I think they will fail to garner any major wins, save for maybe Screenplay.

Alfie Boe > Hugh Jackman DWI. Jackman was chosen to sell tickets. And, once again, if Samantha Barks doesn't win Best Supporting Actress then the Oscars should shut up shop.

I don't doubt this. But Jackman is also a Hollywood actor who has plenty of experience on Broadway. He's won a Tony Award or two. Considering he has acting chops as well as a pretty good singing voice, I think casting him was the best thing they could have done. This isn't the stage they are performing on. This is film.

The reviews I have seen on twitter say she's great at singing but her acting is merely average in the film. Anne Hathaway steals the movie and her version of "I Dreamed a Dream" reportedly brought the whole house to tears. It's hers to lose.
