| How many positions did you apply for before being hired on? (Posted on 11/26/12 at 7:57 am)
Just a poll to see how many places you applied before finally being accepted? Was it right away? What was your % acceptance rate? Just wondering. TIA.

6 months after finishing MBA/MHA, I had applied to probably 60-70 postions. 1 interview (got it). Frustrating as hell!

It always amazes me how slow the process is at some places. You can accept a job and still be getting calls for interviews from other applications you put out months and months later. Very frustrating when those may of ended up in better offers.

I applied for over 200, interviewed for 15 or so. One of the many reasons I have little pity for those who are "trying" to get a job. I finished grad school, studied for the CFA, and still put in 10x the effort as most unemployed do. Most successful people have faced similar trials.

Are you taking new clients? In Houston, right?

I'm graduating with my Ph.D. in 6 months or so (not a worthless Ph.D., mind you - Chemistry), and its shaping up to be a long process.

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not a financial advisor, if that's what you are thinking.

I've just been in Houston for a few months for work. I'll be in NOLA starting in January and who knows where else. I'm not really sure why I keep a house. I should just rent a climate controlled storage unit.

Was actually wondering if you could recommend any? I remembered you weren't an advisor, but thought you may know of someone. No worries if not.

The only decent recommendation I could give you would be Steven Rife at Finadvisors. I don't know much about the company but that guy was very much in tune with my financial views and pretty sharp, overall. If you call him and tell him where you got the rec, he'll know it's me, and, worst case scenario, will help you find the right people.

frick, I am finishing up my Ph.D. in chemistry around then, and have barely done anything to look for jobs other than talk to professors at conferences

Don't fall for the postdoc pyramid scheme, dude. Go into industry. ETA: Unless you have no papers, well then...sorry. You pretty much have to at that point, unless it's a big name postdoc.

None. I was called on the phone and asked to apply. After 26 years I was called on the phone by a competitor and asked to apply.

I probably applied for 40 or so. Inteviewed for 5. 3 offers. 2 of them for different functions that I didn't really want. Small industry though, so a little less competition for fewer openings.

Coming out of school, I applied solely through LSU's career fair (in Oct for May graduation). I probably applied and interviewed for 15 or so companies, prob had 12 offers. Most of the offers came within a week or two.

I don't have the exact number, but I applied to a lot of places. After I graduated I didn't get a career type job for several years - although I was continuously looking. I was a bank teller, forklift driver, worked on a helpdesk, delivered pizzas - whatever I could do to make ends meet. I have a good job now though, so it was worth it.

Every job I've ever had I was approached first by someone I already knew. Fortunate, because I'm not a people person at all and would be terrible in a cold interview with a stranger.

My senior year probably applied for 40ish jobs, interviewed with 10+ of those companies, 3 offers.... Everyone I know who really went after finding a job had a good one when they graduated... Opposite is true for those who half assed it.

Applied to somewhere between 75 and 100. Had a handful of interviews and 3 offers. I got the offer in March and started in August 2011 after graduating. Hoping to stay at the company at least a couple more years and pass a couple levels of CFA before I go out fishing again.
