That is really bad ass, even if he does look goofy as hell with the head cover on.
Thanks. I have to put the hood on or he'll attack the squirrel/rabbit again.

Nice diving hawk sticker on the truck.
Designed it and had a friend cut it out on a plotter. There's a fleeing bunny too but it's hidden behind my hawk.

Is there a specific hunting season with hawks? Obviously you're hunting small game, but I was wondering if there's a hawk season to go along with a rifle season, bow season etc or is it just up to the individual to find the land to hunt on?
In AL, it basically follows the regular season of whatever game you're hunting. But, it goes an extra month. I think most states are pretty similar.

And here's a couple without the goofy head gear. These are all just cell phone photos. I'm going to get my real camera out soon. If you look closely in this one you can see the squirrel's mouth still closed on his toe. They can inflict some nasty bites.

Was the squirrel on the ground or in a tree when he got it? Cool pics

Taking on a big ole squirrel. Didn't realize squirrels could fight so well against hawks, but the time I saw one chase a young hawk off of his perch makes a LOT more sense now.

Neither, it had just missed on something small and fast. It then flew only a little bit away, so I had time to get my camera and come back. And then it proceeded to spend 15 minutes sitting with her back to me, the bitch. Makes sense about the head cover and attacking the game. If you have a decent camera, a tripod, and some (very little really) editing skills you could get a pretty bad arse photo of him sitting over the game without the head gear. Slap the camera on the tripod, shoot him once over the kill with head gear on, then remove the kill and the head gear, and shoot him again while he poses. When you get home, composite the 2 images with a layer mask in gimp, PS etc and BAM, you get a cool photo of Hawkeye posing with his kill.

The chase started up in a tree but ended on the ground when the squirrel tried to make a break for it.

That's not a bad idea. I might do that some time. I have a pretty good dslr and even a degree in that graphic design stuff. I've been planning to take the camera with me soon. Just been waiting on him to get the hang of what's going on. Also have another photographer friend that's dying to tag along.

I bet. It's not often people get to photograph a (relatively) tame animal hunting like that. If I ever get my work schedule back to weekends off I might have to pester you about going as well.

Just let me know if you get a chance and want to go. I'll probably keep this thread going through the hunting season, so you can hit me up here.

He actually got two rabbits this morning. I accidentally practiced catch and release on the first one (thought it was almost dead, got careless and took my stick off of it). So we went for another. The business end.

That's so freaking awesome, Teague. Any hits on the forums about the bird I've been seeing?

Haven't heard anything. Louisiana doesn't have a state falconry club, but one of the officers in the North American Falconry Association lives in LA. He said he had the word out. But, it's possible that hawk could have migrated from somewhere way up north. If nobody ever claims him, the jesses (straps) on his legs are made in such a way that they can be pulled out of the anklets. And the anklets will eventually rot and get brittle, being leather, and they'll break off. So, worst case scenario, he'll just revert to the wild.
