If Southerners were fighting for anything other than to keep their slaves, I might be more sympathetic to the "Lincoln is a tyrant" talk. But, they weren't and he wasn't. It is ridiculous how many people in the South STILL think that the South was justified in what they did. Absurd.

Its sad that you are so easily deceived.

If you don't want to believe it then you are living a lie.

For every horrible story there is a good one. There are most definitely two sides to the coin.

And more importantly, no one that knows history can deny that people were treated worse in the years after the war than before.

Lincoln didn't free slaves out of a moral principle, he did it to change the financial landscape. He even wanted them all shipped out of here after the war... sent to the jungles in South America instead of returning them to Africa. The truth rarely get's told, and a major Hollywood production is the last place you'll find it.

This

Lincoln and the rest of the North saw the competitive advantage the Southern economy had built. Competition against Southern economy was a grave threat to the North. We can sit here and debate the lesser issues that surrounded the Civil War, but nobody can debate the underlying cause of the war. It was about money and control!

The truth is that the Civil War happened because the South was too myopic to see that the future was industrialization and not the slave economy.

They went all in to protect their power and their way of life (which was based on the slave economy). They got so paranoid about the Western Territories that they split the Democratic party in 1860 over the issue of whether the slave code should apply in those areas. This, of course, sealed their defeat to the Republicans, who weren't even on the ballot in the South.

That is not a justification for slavery, dimwit.

The South had no competitive advantage. If anything they were getting left behind in terms of modernization.

Really, then why would the North place tariffs on all imports?

The Norths wages were too high so they placed tariffs to make the South buy their products. The South was not industrialized but they didn't have to be because they could still get goods for cheap. How the frick is that not a competitive advantage?

The South was against all tariffs on imports.

No thanks. I do not rely on Hollywood for keeping me grounded. History books are a great alternative to Hollywood; you should try those.

No shit, this movie will be some hyped bull shite. Did they mention that they fought to free the slaves because westward expansion by the south was growing at an alamrming rate and the north couldn't keep up.

Hollywood is a fricking joke.

To help undo the effects of the Panic of 1857.

At an alarming rate, or with alarming methods? Think Bleeding Kansas.

It seems pretty fricking clear to me that a lot of you tards don't know what the definition of '"tyrant" is.

That....or your over use of hyperbole has muddled your ability to make a cogent argument.

Tariffs were a fight long before the 1857 Panic. Tariffs were a way of making the Norths goods stay competitive with imports. Something the South despised.

The Tariff of 1857 was low and favorable to the South. The Panic was blamed on those tariffs by some and hence the move to raise them.

Well, R...I won't speak for all the 'tards', but since I use that word in reference to Obama on occasion...to my understanding...a tyrant would be some one who rules contrary to true moral principle, and does so without the 'consent of the governed'. If 'governed' even applies in the case of tyrannical rule. Think ObamaCare, for starters.

Bottom line...Obama is a Socialist ideologue; an egalatarian who believes that the democratic majority should assume rulership. And he/they make the (misguided) assumption that they can and will do so, with the true-moral-principle high ground as legitimizing both their right and even a responsibility to do so. That's why they feel justified using lies or tactics that employ a 'end justifies the means' paradigm.

Such is no more than a mob rule form of government which acts on the basis of envy and a desire to mitigate their own sorry work ethic, in a lot of cases. They foolishly believe that by muzzling the prosperity of over acheivers and punishing the 'greedy' rich...that they will live better. Or at least will be *equal*. Fool's gold. And immoral. And impractical. And short-lived with disastrous when employed.

And in Obama's case, with his "white men's greed drives a world in need" spiritual mentor...big trouble. Especially when hell breaks loose.

Watch and see who suffers when the economy collapses, and the mob rule tyrants make their play. It'll be the very mob who bought into this lie and started this crap.

Cogent enough?

Live and learn.

Panic of 1857 (McPherson, 2001)
Textbook

quote:

The minimal impact of the Panic of 1857 in the South underscored Southern boasts about the superiority of their system. While many Northern businesses failed, banks closed, and factories shut down during the depression, causing unemployment and suffering among Northern workers during the winter of 1857-1858, cotton prices held firm and cotton crops set new records. This led Senator James Hammond to deliver his famous “King Cotton” speech in the Senate on March 4, 1858. Southerners were “unquestionably the most prosperous people on earth.” Only the continued exports of cotton during the Panic, Hammond told the North, “saved you from destruction.” This was conclusive proof of slavery’s virtues.

James M. McPherson, Ordeal by Fire: The Civil War and Reconstruction, 3rd ed. (New York: McGraw-Hill, 2001), 122-123.

Dred Scott vs Standford 1857 basically made the Missouri Compromise Illegal. Again, another threat to the North.

re: Go see Lincoln the Movie and get Grounded

Yeah, Tx...it is. I related the movie as being a primer for Obama's (potential) Lincolnesque Constitutional power grab, in order to (again) *save* our Union. Difference being...that in the case, he don't want to save it...he intends to "FUNDAMENTALLY change" it. BIIIIGGGG difference.
