Lately I've seen a lot of posters recommend others to build their own PC to save some money and get exactly what they need. Even though I'm no PC expert, I decided to try it after checking out the tutorial by newegg since it didn't seem too complex.
I finally got my last part in the mail yesterday and started my build. As per the newegg tutorial, I did an external build to make sure I don't screw anything up before putting all the components in the case. I assembled everything and triggered the start button. The PSU, CPU, and video card fans all started moving but my monitor said it was not receiving a signal so I couldn't see if I was getting the splash screen the newegg tutorial talks about.
Like I said, I know very little about computer parts so I'm not too sure what could be the problem. My monitor only came with a Dsub-Dsub cable but my video card doesn't have a dsub port so I went to the store to buy a hdmi-dvi cable since he only other port my monitor has is a dvi one. Could this be the issue? My video card also has a dvi port, should I use a dvi-dvi cable instead?
Everything else seems to be working properly and cables plugged right. Anyone has a guess on what might be the problem?

did you plug the monitor into the electrical outlet.

Ha! Yes I did, and the monitor turns on fine with the logo and stuff. But then "No signal detected" pops up on the screen. So I'm pretty sure the monitor is not the issue. Any other guesses?

gpu working? I'm no expert but it could be a V card problem. maybe remove it from the motherboard and try again? or get a new dvi/hdmi cable.

I tried taking it out and putting and back but same thing happens again. Pardon my ignorance but how do I know if the gpu is working? The fans on it are spinning, but I'm not sure what else to look for.

eh if the fan is on the gpu should be fine...honestly I would unplug everything on the mobo and plug it all back in. see if you can find something off.

I'll try that. If I don't have any luck I'll go try to exchange the cable once the Black Friday crazies have come and gone. In the mean time if anyone else has a suggestion, feel free to share it!

Do you have the vid card in the right PCI slot? Sounds silly but I didn't when I did my first build. The card would power on but not output any signal.

I put it in the PCIE 16x slot as opposed to the PCIE 16x_T slot. Seems to be the right now according to the mobo manual.

Which power supply did you get?
IXISweat bought a 600 watt power supply but it was one of those energy efficient "green" power supplies and it would kick his fans on like your I think but couldn't power the whole system all the way.

Coolmax 600W ATX12V. I don't see anything about it being green or efficient.
I got my build off of pcpartpicker. Shouldn't it tell me if it wasn't enough for my build?

does your Motherboard have an on board video card that you can hook up the monitor to in order to test?

Oh...I put one of these in a cheaper build I did for my uncle. Well it was the 750 watt version but same model. It wouldn't fire up the GPU at first for some reason. I had to toggle it to 240, turn the computer on, then off, then toggle back to 120, and turn the computer back on to get it to kick on the GPU. Not sure why but that's the only way I could get it to work.

Use the onboard card first. Download necessary drivers for your video card. Profit.

I once neglected to plug the video card in to the power supply enough times (there were 3 places to plug on my bizarro world card, a normal card will have 1 or 2).
The cord could also be bad, or it could just be a driver issue.

Should be a switch or sliding button on the power supply.
