I don't think it was lies per se, they just talked out their ass. And for a time in the 80s, it really did whallop the straight community. Nothing like it did to the gays but it was an epidemic in many cities, due one dude shooting up and getting it and then fricking a bunch of woman. I think most of that curtailed with needle exchange programs.
It was an intentional lie re: studies. And it was designed to scare the straight community. Go back in time. In the mid 80s Jerry Lewis was raising tons of cash for Muscular Dystrophy. Why? Because before that tons of cash was raised by March of Dimes, founded in 1938 to wipe out polio. Well, polio got wiped out by the Salk vaccine in the early 50s. I ate the sugar cube. And if you know what that means, I'm impressed. Jerry tried to replicate it. Didn't work except for making tons of cash for the non profits. AIDS advocates at that time wanted the same treatment. They knew they were not getting donations like that because AIDS was viewed as 'self inflicted' as opposed to Polio or M.S. So, they tried the 'Break Out' scare. Everyone will get AIDS, so you better lobby your Congressman for more money.

Lee Harvey Oswald did it with a tree in his way, and convinietly defied physics with a head shot that went backwards.

You missed #6.) Zach never lost a high school debate.

Interesting since...
quote:
AIDS was first clinically observed in 1981 in the United States The World Health Organization first proposed a definition for AIDS in 1986 By September 1982 the CDC started referring to the disease as AIDS. ...in 1986, LAV and HTLV-III were renamed HIV

Try to learn how to read. I amended my quote. Or, perhaps you were not around in the mid 80s when Reagan was blamed for AIDS? Or perhaps you think Reagan was President in the 90s? How sad.

Try to learn how to edit your post, your OP still says "by 1980".

Yes, I was sexually active in the 80's, and no, I don't remember anyone saying that about Reagan, but then I didn't have the PoliBoard to keep up with dimwits like you who are liable to say all manner of ridiculous shite.

WTF? You think Reagan was president in the 90's??? You're even dumber than I thought!

There was an oil shortage due to the OPEC embargo. Lines were horrible. Flags went up and down if stations had gas.

Very true. And I should have been more specific in regard to meaning that a plethora of stories were circulating at the time with conflicting "reasons" for the situation. But you are right. There was a shortage.
