| Car totaled - how to get best settlement with insurance? (Posted on 11/21/12 at 12:12 pm)
The basics: Not at fault. Not ticketed. Got rear-ended and the car was totaled. Insurance company's first offer (car value + TTL minus my deductible) is about $2,400 less than what I was expecting. Any negotiating tips to suggest as far as getting their offer to come higher? I based my valuation off of the NADA value of the car. They are using their valuation off of their secret squirrel method. They've shown me their data samples taken to arrive at their figure. I will find samples to support my figure as far as the value of the car is concerned. Is there anything else that can tilt things in my favor? Should I try to drag this out?

You got rear ended but are claiming on your own insurance? If it's the other person's insurance, there shouldn't be a deductible, at least thats how my experiences have gone.

Tell us the names of the two insurance companies involved. And also, please tell us which one is yours. Makes a big difference.

Yeah my husband got hit and truck was totalled. For some reason I remember getting money and paying the ded (I guess to speed up the process) from our insurance who then was reimbursed by theirs. We got our ded back.

My insurance: Progressive His insurance: USAA Why I'm going through my insurance? It's complicated. I'll keep it short by saying it's the only option I have at the moment.

USAA works very hard for their client from my experience. Did they happen to find a loophole?

Same here, but OP says he is going through Progressive. When you talk to your adjuster, throw in the word "bad faith" and you believe you are getting screwed and are about to hire an attorney over property damage. Then, call USAA and make them pay--they will pay better and not cling to some obscure policy language that allows the to use the squirrel method of valuation. good luck.

I don't understand why you are upset about getting value + ttl - deductible if you are going through your own insurance. I'm kind of suprised your insurance is even willing to pay it out if another insurance company should be.

Thanks everyone. This is my first time dealing with all of this, so perspective and experience helps. I will see what USAA puts on the table and go from there. Thanks again!
