| Go see Lincoln the Movie and get Grounded (Posted on 11/20/12 at 8:51 am)
Went to see Lincoln on Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it. All our present day media hype, doom and gloom is exposed by this movie. If you want to see how a young democracy withstands civil war with a Republican President who has to deal with strong passionate divisions from within, go see this movie. If you go, I recommend a brush up on what happen. Abraham Lincoln The movie is like a documentary. You get to see how Lincoln confidently manages a war, working with branches of government and political parties to end slavery. Lincoln is very hands own involved in all aspects of the war. Even frequently replacing Generals who were not aggressive enough in pursuing General Lee and the Rebs. My Favorite scenes were the ones that played out in the House of Representatives. "The movie focuses on the last four months of Lincoln’s life, with nearly all the movie centered in January 1865, with the push for approving of the 13th Amendment (abolishing slavery) by the House of Representatives at the end of that month. The Senate had given its approval the previous year." This movie will school you on what lengths a political party will go to win enough votes to pass new legislation when all odds are against its passage.

No thanks. I do not rely on Hollywood for keeping me grounded. History books are a great alternative to Hollywood; you should try those.

A closed mind is a lost soul. Why not see the movie and use your study of history to critique the accuracy of the movie?

Good thing it does focus of the days post Gettysburg when they finally found a reason for the war.

Go see a Hollywood movie made by a very liberal director and "get grounded". This is the absolute perfect embodiment of the liberal thought process. No wonder we have a celebrity in chief. Reality no longer matters. I'm gonna bookmark this one for future reference.

Saw this thing Sunday. Treats Lincoln like a freedom loving abolitionist who revered the constitution. Had to giggle on my way out for popcorn

If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views.
Oh, Honest Abe, you motor boating son of a bitch. God Bless America.

And the movie Queen of the Damned was based off of Anne Rice's book, and was so far from the book that she now refuses to allow any more to be made.

If he's not portrayed as a tyrant its not grounded in anything but revisionist history.

Most Americans consider Abraham Lincoln to be the greatest president in history. His legend as the Great Emancipator has grown to mythic proportions as hundreds of books, a national holiday, and a monument in Washington, D.C., extol his heroism and martyrdom. But what if most everything you knew about Lincoln were false? What if, instead of an American hero who sought to free the slaves, Lincoln were in fact a calculating politician who waged the bloodiest war in american history in order to build an empire that rivaled Great Britain's? In The Real Lincoln, author Thomas J. DiLorenzo uncovers a side of Lincoln not told in many history books and overshadowed by the immense Lincoln legend. Through extensive research and meticulous documentation, DiLorenzo portrays the sixteenth president as a man who devoted his political career to revolutionizing the American form of government from one that was very limited in scope and highly decentralized—as the Founding Fathers intended—to a highly centralized, activist state. Standing in his way, however, was the South, with its independent states, its resistance to the national government, and its reliance on unfettered free trade. To accomplish his goals, Lincoln subverted the Constitution, trampled states' rights, and launched a devastating Civil War, whose wounds haunt us still. According to this provacative book, 600,000 American soldiers did not die for the honorable cause of ending slavery but for the dubious agenda of sacrificing the independence of the states to the supremacy of the federal government, which has been tightening its vise grip on our republic to this very day. You will discover a side of Lincoln that you were probably never taught in school—a side that calls into question the very myths that surround him and helps explain the true origins of a bloody, and perhaps, unnecessary war. The Real Lincoln

Ah, yes, Lincoln was a politician. The movie has several examples of how he used his lawyer skills to get what he wanted. It's why everyone should go see the movie. The politicking was awesome to watch!

The "Lost Cause" and neo-confederate ideology on this board is a joke. If Southerners were fighting for anything other than to keep their slaves, I might be more sympathetic to the "Lincoln is a tyrant" talk. But, they weren't and he wasn't. It is ridiculous how many people in the South STILL think that the South was justified in what they did. Absurd.

Something like this will come out and liberals will claim it as a great factual representation of history. If something that shows conservative ideology comes out it is racist, hate filled, and only acceptable to bigot republicans. I don't mind seeing both sides, but that's not what anyone really wants. They want me (everyone) to see THEIR side. The way Lincoln is portrayed by history books is disingenuous in its incompleteness. Was he a remarkable person? Yes. Was he at all what 99% of Americans think he is? Not even close.

So we're supposed to go see a movie that glorifies a horrible tyrant?

I don't consider politicking to be a desirable or honorable trait.

The only thing truly lost is the right to choose your own government and rulers as spelled out in this country's very own Declaration of Independence from Britain. Also lost, or rather slowly eroded since was state sovereignty and the concept of states governing themselves without the feds using their very own money as a hostage to be used against them if they don't fall in line. It's not quite as silly as you would like it to be.

If Lincoln is a tyrant, then the South was a tyrannical society. So, it is basically a wash, right? Why villify Lincoln and give the South that he fought against a pass? If Lincoln was wrong (and I see the merit of that argument based on what he did to the Constitution), his error must be seen in the light of what he was fighting against. I am a son of the South and no liberal, by the way. But, I can see the error of the South in their entire societal approach. They were perhaps justified in the theory of secession, but what they were seceding over was a disaster.
