Hobby Lobby Denied Obamacare Waiver

For those not in the know, they were suing because the owners are very religious and they said that it was against their religion to provide contraceptive coverage.

The Judge came back and said that only religious institutions can claim that.

While I personally don't think contraceptive is that big of a deal, I do believe in a persons right to choose what they believe and what they want to be associated with.

Why should a for-profit company have a different set of standards than a non-profit in regards to Obamacare?

Will be fricking hilarious if Hobby Lobby comes out and says "We are cutting everyone's hours to 29hrs a week"

Dumb question... But can you please explain?

btw, if Hobby Lobby truly believes that their faith doesn't allow for them to provide contraception to people then they should def cut hours back. If not, they are hypocritical like a lot of religious people.

Profit is evil according to some.

HL would be justified in doing this, but the blow-back from the Left-stream media would be cataclysmic.

I really don't know what the big deal is about health insurance. I worked for a private company right out of college who downsized and dropped me to part-time status, thus losing my health care coverage. I simply went out and purchased my own, which was not very easy considering I was making less than $5.00/hour.

When Hostess announced it was going to liquidate, I posted a FB status saying "Who is John Galt and where is he going with my Twinkies?"

No one thought it was funny,

Nope. You just have to fund it for your employees.

sure. But there are other regulations like that.

I may not approve of breeding but I have to give time off for having kids.

I may prefer to avoid hiring black people, but I can't discriminate against them.

I might not want to serve mexicans, but I will surely get in trouble if I don't

I may want to consume peyote as a part of a religious ceremony, I would get arrested if I did.

All of these could and have been framed as part of a religion. I get where you are coming from, but I don't think this burden is much more burdensome than we already have.

It doesn't mean that they are hypocritical...that is just shallow reasoning on your part.

This is splitting hairs, but I think that companies are only required to offer leave through FMLA, which is applicable to several types of leave related to family.

I don't see how this is similar. In this case you are discriminating based in race, in another, you are deciding not to provide a benefit to any of your employees.

I think a better analogy would be if the government made you buy and consume peyote for others.

There really isn't much precedent for government making people directly buy things for others. It's a little troubling.

It's not, but how many little dink and dunk regulations do they get to make before they become burdensome as a whole?

IMO, this is really the problem with big government. It's not really the big ticket items like healthcare and military spending. Those things at least have a prayer of being fixed.

It's the tiny little dings that our personal freedoms take every day that most people seem to be ok with.

How so? They go to court claiming they cannot provide contraception to their employees bc it's against their beliefs...

A judge says they are not exempt, so if it truly was about their religious beliefs then they will do the only other option and cut hours so that they won't have to provide it....

I agree, they won't do this, so that makes them hypocritical.... They have the balls to go court and claim its all about their religion but don't feel it's that important...

So they are just religious when it benefits them

If they allowed every company that claimed it was against their beliefs to get a waiver, then potentially any company could get a waiver. Now, whether or not employers should be forced to provide contraceptive coverage in the first place is a different argument. But with the law in place, I think you have to draw the line at actual religious institutions, not just companies with religious leadership.

wait, what? If I don't approve of people breeding and have a business, I still have to give time off for the kids. Its fricking identical.

still gov't regulation that may interfere with a religion.

still gov't that interferes with the practice of religion.
