This is a question that has plagued my mind for an awfully long time. I still can't seem to find the answer to it. A lot of revisionists like to point to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Dixiecrats and falsely claim that, after they failed to defeat the Civil Rights Act, these racist, segregationalist Dixiecrats joined with Republicans. In actuality, of the 26 so-called Dixiecrats, all but 3 returned to the Democrat Party after they failed to halt the passage of the Civil Rights Act - a bill that would not have been passed without Republican support.
Republicans, since their founding in 1854, have always been the more pro-Civil Rights of the two parties. And yet, over the last 50 years or so, the Republican Party has become known as the white man's party. They have completely lost the vote of minorities. You listen to the Republican leadership and you can tell there is no bigotry or racism to be found, at least at the head of the Party. So what gives?

African-Americans, as a majority, seem to have lost themselves...things that are thought to be strengths, are slipping away - family, religion, conservative views.
A few outsiders are defining African-Americans and dictating to them what they do, how they are supposed to act, and it's detrimental to a high percentage.

LBJ was able to grab almost 90% of the black vote in '64. Goldwater didn't help things but Nixon did capture more black votes in '72. Kennedy helped the cause with Civil Rights Act but he also called MLK's wife while MLK was in jail during the 1960 campaign against Nixon. He reached out even though he was skeptical of the cause.
LBJ was a champion of the African American community. I believe Kennedy was way overrated on Civil Rights issues. Most of LBJs visitors at his funeral were African American. The Kennedy White House tapes are not very flattering towards Black people but that's a big shhhhh.

Also, Nixon was awesome towards African Americans during his presidency. Nobody talks about that though.

Seriously, go find everybody with a rebel flag hanging somewhere on their property or on their clothes.
Ask them if they are republican or democrat.
There's your answer. When Repubs break away from the fringe groups, they will get more of the moderate thinkers of all races.

My father in law is as racist as they get. Has a rebel flag on his house.
Votes Democrat 100% of the time.

LBJ plus continuing to nominate a eugenicist (Nixon).
Of course, now they have no problem with eugenicists in their own party...
